Deadlocked after 17 holes with a challenger half her age, Bev

Women's Match Play championship yesterday at a rain-soaked Oahu
Country Club. Kim's triumph over Kalaya Bhaedhayajibh, 25, was
her third-ever state match play title, the first two coming in
1971 and 1972. Said Kim: "Everybody likes to bring this age
thing up. But it was really to my advantage today." Kim went on
to mention a handful of older women golfers--Joan Damon, Edna

** Club Hopes for New Life for Bodysurfing **
Formed two years ago, the Point Panic Bodysurfing Club will

Point Panic next to Kewalo Basin, surf permitting. Said club
founder Kalei Kawewehi: "We want people to know that bodysurfing
will always be there for them. Some people can't afford a board
or a car to put a board on. Well, you don't need any of that to
bodysurf. If you're a strong swimmer and have a pair of swim
fins, the rest will come with practice." About three years ago,
the state officially designated Point Panic as a "bodysurfers-
only" spot. Surf- and bodyboards are banned there. "The older
generation fought hard to make this place only for bodysurfers,"

returning to the Islands. Said Coolen: "Brooke's said she sat

something was wrong when I checked my time at six miles," said
Salter, a former 3,200-meter state champion for Moanalua High
School. He won first-to-finish honors in 33 minutes, 24 seconds.

Al Walker, Butch Estes, and Larry Hauser are the three finalists
for the vacant Chaminade University head basketball coaching job.
Noticeably absent from the list is former Silversword head man,
Merv Lopes, who coached Chaminade from 1977 to 1989 and led the
Kaimuki school to national prominence with wins over top-ranked
Division I powerhouse programs. For the most part, the three
remaining candidates--survivors from an original applicant pool
of 140--are unknown to local hoop fans. Walker and Estes are the
respective head coaches at Cornell and Furman, and Hauser is a
long-time assistant at Santa Clara. Chaminade officials say they

Eleven competitors from Hawaii amassed a total of 17 medals--nine
gold--at the World Karate Federation World Junior Championships

Africa in the team competition. George Kotaka and Elisa Au won
two golds apiece while Barbara Chinen, Shannon Nishi, Jamie

competition was marred by controversy as the host South Africans
were allowed to enter up to six competitors in a particular
category while other countries were allowed just one. Au noted
that the judging, conducted almost exclusively by South African

Rainbows, who finished in the top five in attendance for the 13th
straight season, sold a total of 129,696 tickets for 39 home
dates, an average of 3,326 per contest. LSU led the country in

** Grid Playoff Expansion for OIA **
Twelve Oahu Interscholastic Association football teams will take
part in postseason playoffs next season. Previously, eight teams
qualified. Next season, five teams from the red (highest)
division, four from the white, and three from the blue will enter
the postseason play. The increased number of playoff qualifiers
came as a consequence of feedback from league coaches, who said
they found it difficult to motivate athletes to play in
conference (consolation) games. As such, the consolation playoff
set-up will be eliminated. In an apparent cost-cutting move, the
OIA also announced that varsity football doubleheaders at Aloha
Stadium will be eliminated. Instead, varsity games will be
preceded by a junior varsity game between the competing schools.
** Garcia Advances in Quiksilver **
After defeating former world champion Tom Carroll yesterday,
Hawaii's Sunny Garcia, currently ranked second in the world,
moved into the round of 16 at the Quiksilver Pro surf meet at
East Java, Indonesia. Among Garcia's three best rides was a
perfect ten where he was barreled twice. Two other local boys,
Ross Williams and Derek Ho, also advanced to the round of 16.

** Regatta Wins for Lanikai, Lokahi **
Lanikai and Lokahi Canoe Clubs paddled to regatta victories in
their respective association under sunny Oahu skies yesterday.
Over at Keehi Lagoon, the green and white clad throng from
Lanikai, about 350 paddlers strong, won its first Oahu Hawaiian
Canoe Racing Association title since 1972 by outpointing
perennial winner Outrigger, 93-69 to win the Healani Canoe Club-
sponsored Clem Paiaina Regatta. "We know it's been a long time,"
said Lanikai coach Bob Puakea, "but we showed that anything's
possible. Last year's Molokai-to-Oahu race victory by the
Lanikai men drew a host of new paddlers to the club,
strengthening an already solid organization. "Lanikai showed
that they're the team to beat this year," said Outrigger coach
Kalani Schraeder. In the Hui Wa'a Association, Lokahi
demonstrated its continued might, easily winning the Kamehameha
Regatta off of Kailua Beach Park. The Ala Wai Canal-based club
amassed 79 points to runner-up Koa Kai's 47.

served as either coach or manager for the Tsunami organization
since it was established three years ago. "But an opportunity
like this doesn't come along too often." Doyle replaces Robert

press conference earlier this year, University of Hawaii
basketball coach Riley said he doesn't expect to receive an
extension on his current contract. Without the extension, the UH
coach will have two years remaining at the UH hoop helm.
Wallace said he didn't expect an extension after he openly

consequences," said Wallace.

** Salud TKO's Galatti in 4th **
Angered by a pre-match act of one-upmanship, Jesus Salud
overwhelmed Michael Galatti, winning by TKO in the fourth round
last night in front of about 2,000 fans at Blaisdell Arena.
Normally composed and businesslike, Salud turned into a demon
after Galatti threw a sucker punch into his ribs following a pre-
match touching of gloves. "That got me mad," said Salud. "I
wanted to tear him apart." That he did, attacking Galatti at
every turn and knocking down the former Bulgarian national team
boxer for the first time in his 22 professional bouts. A
powerful Salud left to the body prompted referee Herbert Minn
to stop the fight two minutes into the fourth round. "This felt
good," said Salud of the victory.
** Wilton to Speak **
University of Hawaii men's volleyball coach Mike Wilton will be

fledgling Vulcans wahine volleyball program but he opted for a
mainland coaching position. In 1995 and 1996, Wilton led the UH
men to two NCAA final four berths, where they finished fourth in
1995 and second this year.

** Salud-Galatti Tonight **
It'll be the slugger versus the boxer when Jesus Salud meets
Michael Galatti tonight at Blaisdell Arena. Both fighters
weighed in at 124 pounds but the similarity between them ends
there. Salud, raised in Nanakuli, is the local favorite. A
powerful puncher with a penchant for pummeling his opponents with
punishing body shots, Salud is a seasoned pro with a 52-7 record.
Galatti, on the other hand, grew up in communist Bulgaria, where
he was recruited as youngster to be a fighter. In 1986, in the
midst of a successful career on the Bulgarian national team, he
defected to the United States where he continued to box as a pro,
carving out a 19-2 record. Mostly a counter-puncher, Galatti
said he's looking forward to the fight. "I'm planning to give it
everything I have," he said. "It'll be interesting," said Salud.
** Tough Slate for '97 Baseball 'Bows **
The University of Hawaii baseball team will play one of its most
challenging schedules ever next season, according to head coach
Les Murakami. "We have a strong Easter Tournament field and we
are also playing four teams from the Pacific-10," he said. The
Rainbows will begin their 1997 campaign by hosting the HulaFest
Leadoff Tournament (Jan 16-18), which will feature this year's
yet-to-be-determined college world series champion and two other
tournament qualifiers. Later in the season, Hawaii will also
face six other teams who advanced to postseason play this year,
including Wichita State, UCLA, and USC.
** Pavao Improves--Still Eliminated **
Mike Pavao gave a much better accounting of himself yesterday at
the NCAA Golf Championships at Ooltewah, Tenn. but still was
eliminated. The University of Hawaii golfer, who shot a
disastrous 85 on Wednesday, fired an even-par 72 yesterday. His
157 total was well short of the cutoff score of 150 he needed to
advance. "I had fun," he said. "I enjoyed every swing."
Stanford's Tiger Woods leads the tournament with a score of 8-
under 136.

** Salud--True Local Boy **
One might expect a top-ranked pro boxer to live a life of glitz
and glamour--not Nanakuli's Jesus Salud, who will meet Michael
Gallati in a 124-pound non-title bout tomorrow night at Blaisdell
Arena. Now a resident of San Diego, Salud, a former WBA super-
bantamweight title-holder, has spent much of his non-training
time here helping his parents move from to their new home in
Honokai Hale. He turned down an offer to stay in a Waikiki
hotel, opting instead to stay at the family homestead in
Nanakuli. "He's still the same guy," said good friend and high
school classmate Anthony Palacio. "He didn't let success go to
his head." Said Salud: "I try to give everybody respect. I know
I'm not special."

** Nunokawa: Gender Equity or Else **
Hawaii Gender Equity Sports Club president Jill Nunokawa says
that administrators of local prep sports will be subject to legal

they're not recognizing any discrimination." One of the
specifics that Nunokawa pointed out is that the girls' basketball

we'd better work toward it."
