** Wahine, BYU to Battle for Final Four Spot **
Hawaii and Brigham Young surged to semifinal wins last night at
the Special Events Arena and will meet tonight for the NCAA
Mountain Regional women's volleyball title and the right to
advance to the Final Four. Paced by Angelica Ljungquist and
Therese Crawford, who slapped down 19 kills apiece, the Wahine
downed a tough Texas team, 15-13, 13-15, 15-13, 15-2. Earlier,
BYU outbattled Pacific in a grueling five-game match. A crowd of
just over 9,000, many chanting "Beat the Cougars!" at the
conclusion of the Hawaii-Texas match, watched the Wahine improve
to 33-2. "I'm glad it is BYU," said a smiling Crawford. "I want
to beat them." BYU (27-6) has a 25-match winning streak entering
tonight's showdown, including a victory over the Wahine for the
Western Athletic Conference championship earlier this month.
** Kahuku Teammates Honored **
Former Kahuku High teammates Chris Naeole ('92) and Itula Mili
('91) were named to the 12-player Football Coaches Association of
America All-America offensive team yesterday. Naeole, the first
consensus All-American from Hawaii since Herman Wedemeyer, is an
offensive guard for Colorado. Mili plays tight end for Brigham
Young, snaring 46 passes for 692 yards this season for the
Cougars. Both are seniors and are considered first round draft
choices for the pros; however, Mili's status is in question after
he sustained a serious knee injury in the WAC title game against
Wyoming two weeks ago.
** HPU Gets Two-Player Boost **
Ranked eighth in the NAIA with a 3-1 record, Hawaii Pacific is
already a good small college basketball team. The Sea Warriors,
led by fiery coach Tony Selitto, will become even stronger this
week with the addition of two talented players--6-foot-10 center
J.J Lucas, a transfer from Vanderbilt, and skywalking forward
Robert Parker. Both had to sit out because of eligibility
criteria. Lucas, the son of former NBA player Jerry Lucas, will
team with 7-1 center Juergen Malbeck to give HPU a "twin towers"
attack. Parker, the possessor of a 40-inch vertical leap and the
team's most athletic player, can play guard or forward. "We're
hoping it all fits together," said Selitto. "The cream always
rises to the top."

** Can Wahine Hook 'Horns? **
The UH Wahine (32-2) will face a formidable foe in Texas (23-6)
in tonight's NCAA Mountain Regional semifinal match in front of a
capacity crowd at the Special Events Arena. Mick Haley, the
coach of the Lady Longhorns, is being wooed as the next head man
of the U.S. National team, and one of the top players on that
team could be Demetria Sance, a sophomore superstar for Texas.
Sance leads the 'Horns in per game kills (4.3) and digs (3.55).
In last season's Final Four, where Texas finished as runner-up to
Nebraska, she amassed 45 kills and 35 digs. "She's very
powerful," said UH coach Dave Shoji, seeking his fifth national
title. "But she's a finesse player as well and can tip, hit off
speed..."
** All-America Honors for Five **
Five players with Hawaii ties were named to the NAIA Women's
Volleyball All-America team announced yesterday. Three are
members of the national champion BYU-Hawaii Seasiders, including
first team honorees Daniela Carneiro, a 5-9 senior outsider
hitter, and Arlete Silva, 6-0 freshman middle blocker, and second
team choice Becky Laubach, a 6-0 junior middle blocker. Also
named to the second team was California Baptist senior outside
hitter Stacy Tongg, a Hawaii Baptist Academy grad. UH-Hilo
senior middle blocker Lei Kaisa earned a spot on the third team.
** Naeole a Consensus Choice **
Also in the spotlight yesterday was University of Colorado
offensive lineman Chris Naeole, a 1992 grad of Kahuku High, who
became the first football player from Hawaii to earn consensus
All-America honors since Herman Wedemeyer accomplished the fete
for St. Mary's College in 1945. A semifinalist for this year's
Outland Trophy, an award given to the country's top lineman,
Naeole was a first team selection five of the "Big Six" all-star
teams, including the Associated Press, Walter Camp, Sporting
News, American Football Coaches Association, and Football News.
Scouts have rated the 6-foot-3, 320-pound senior as the 19th best
offensive player at any position available for this year's pro
draft. Said Naeole: "I just focused on helping the team and
figured the accolades would come if we were successful."
Colorado finished 10-2 this year and will meet Washington and
former Pac-Five star Ink Aleaga in the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 30.
** UH Basketball News **
Backup center Danny Furlong will be out of action for several
weeks because of fractured big toe sustained in practice this
week. The 6-10 senior had been averaging 5.2 points and 3.4
rebounds in relief of starting center Seth Sundberg. The
Rainbows will host the four-team Hawaii Nike Basketball Festival
this weekend. On Saturday at the Special Events Arena, the 'Bows
will face Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo in a first-round game.
Alabama-Birmingham will take on Ball State in the other opening
round game.
----
The UH Wahine will also host a tournament--the 4-team Wahine
Invitational--this weekend at the Special Events Arena. Hawaii
(2-3) will square off against Wright State (0-5) and Mississippi
(5-1) will challenge Santa Clara (4-1) in opening round games
Saturday afternoon.
** Sports Shorts **
Former Iolani soccer coach Bob Barry was named the West regional
Coach of the Year by National Soccer Coaches Association of
America. Barry has taken a leave from Iolani and is currently an
assistant coach at the University of Richmond.
----
High School soccer is in full swing with eight boys' teams and
eight girls' teams entered in the Hawaii Prep Academy-sponsored
Ka Makani Soccer Classic this weekend on the Big Island. On
Oahu, eight teams will participate in the Roosevelt Christmas
Invitational Girls' Soccer Tournament.
----
Waimea High's Sean Jardin has been named the Aloha Bowl Athlete
of the Year for his exploits for Na Menehune in 1996. Jardin
earned all-star honors in football, track, soccer, and baseball.
He also maintains a 3.5 grade point average.
----
Punahou's Anna Umemura and Waiakea's Natalie Nakamura have signed
letters of intent to play golf for mainland colleges next year.
Umemura will attend the University of Tennessee and Nakamura the
University of San Francisco.

** UH Sports Okay Dollar-wise **
Despite low ticket sales for football program--the traditional
cash cow--the University of Hawaii athletic department will still
have enough money to support UH sports teams next year. An
average of 25,969 fans per game turned out to watch Fred
vonAppen's football 'Bows this season, the lowest turnstile count
in 17 years. Nonetheless, the football program was still able to
bring in the $2.9 million it needs to meet its budget. Helping
matters considerably is the UH Wahine volleyball program, which
has netted more than half a million dollars over its projected
$400,000 budget. The extra $500,000, plus bonus revenue earned by
the successful UH men's volleyball program, will help support
other low- and non-revenue-producing sports teams. "We're not
under duress or stress right now," said UH associate athletic
director Jim Donovan.
** Ah Mow Leads Wahine **
The UH Wahine volleyball team will meet Texas in an NCAA Mountain
Regional semifinal match tomorrow night at the Special Events
Arena and the fate of the Wahine literally rests in the hands of
All-America setter Robyn Ah Mow. "Her hands are incredible,"
said Texas A&M coach Laurie Corbelli after Ah Mow's passing
helped the Wahine crush the Aggies in a playoff match last year.
According to UNLV coach Deitre Collins, a former UH Wahine great,
"Robyn makes everything happen on this team. She sees exactly
what's happening on the other side and knows how to counter-
attack it. She's incredible." The ultimate compliment comes
from UH coach Dave Shoji, who gives Ah Mow complete control of
the Wahine offense on the floor. "She may be the best we've ever
had at the position," said Shoji. A 1993 graduate of McKinley
High, Ah Mow is a senior at UH.
** Four-peat for Seasiders? **
After winning their third NAIA title in a row last weekend, is a
fourth straight national championship in the cards for the BYU-
Hawaii Wahine volleyball team in 1997? If it is, the Seasiders
will have to complete the task without three 1996 starters--
seniors Daniela Carneiro and Carrie Crippen, who've completed
their eligibility, and junior middle blocker Becky Laubach, who
is expected to begin a two-year mission for the Mormon Church
next spring. Returning starters include freshmen sensations
Juliana Lima (setter) and Arlete Silva (middle blocker) and
outside hitter Ana Alves. In 1998, BYUH will compete on the NCAA
Division II level, so next season will the Seasiders' last in the
NAIA. "We definitely want to go out by winning another title,"
said BYUH coach Wilfred Navalta. "We're going to have a pretty
good team again."

** Shoji Worried **
With the NCAA regional semifinals quickly approaching, University
of Hawaii volleyball coach Dave Shoji is wondering if the
competition has cozied up to his 5th-ranked team. On Thursday at
the Special Events Arena, the Wahine (32-2) will take on Texas
(23-6) in one Mountain Regional semifinal. Brigham Young (26-6)
and Pacific (26-6) will meet in the other. "All three teams had
a lot of improving to do where we just couldn't improve that
much," said Shoji. "The question is, have they caught up to us
or are we still ahead of them?" Texas coach Mick Haley said his
players, led by setter Pavlina Steffkova and outside hitters
Demetria Stance and Sarah Butler, are "playing quite well.
Everybody is on a good roll." Thursday's winners will square off
on Friday night for the regional championship and a berth in the
Final Four.
----
Wahine middle blocker Angelica Ljungquist was named to the GTE
Academic All-America team yesterday. A senior from Sweden,
Ljungquist carries a 3.31 GPA as a political science major. She
also is in line to become the Wahine's first four-time All
American, having been chosen to the second team in her freshman
and sophomore years and the first team last year.
** Villoria, Manuel Have Olympic Dreams **
The Waipahu Boxing Club is the training ground for two local
fighters with Olympic aspirations. The duo, Waipahu High's Brian
Villoria and Campbell High's Marc Manuel, has fared well in
national competition and each hopes to gain a berth on the US
Olympic team for the 2000 Games in Australia. Villoria, a 106-
pounder, boasts a 51-0 record with two National Junior Olympic
crowns and three straight Aloha State Games titles on his list of
accomplishments. Manuel, who fights in the 100-pound class, won
a silver medal in this year's Junior Olympics. "We're good
fighters because our parents are behind us," said Villoria.
"They push us when we feel like giving up."
** Saints 15th **
Interscholastic League of Honolulu and Oahu Prep Bowl champion
St. Louis is ranked 15th in this week's USA Today Super 25 high
school football rankings. The Crusaders, after edging OIA
champion Waianae, 7-0, in the Prep Bowl, finished the season with
a 13-0 record.
** Villarmia Heads Na Ali'i JV **
Former UH Wahine basketball player Fran Villarmia used to play
hard when she donned the Rainbow green and white. Now, as head
coach of the Aiea High boys' junior varsity team, she exhorts her
Na Ali'i charges to do the same. An all-state player at Aiea in
the late 80s, Villarmia continued her hoop exploits as a Wahine.
After graduating from UH, Villarmia returned to Aiea where she
served as assistant to boys' varsity coach Rodney Cavaco for
three seasons. When the JV post became available this year,
Cavaco chose Villarmia to fill it. "The first couple days, (the
players) were calling me 'Miss.' I told them they can call me
'Coach,'" she smiled. Villarmia is the first female head coach
of a boys' basketball team in the OIA.

respective men's and women's champions at yesterday's Honolulu
Marathon. Both earned $20,000 for their victories. Over 26,000
runners lined up behind the Ala Moana Park starting line for the

** World Cup Title to Paterson **
Australia's Paul Paterson negotiated 6- to 10-foot waves and 30
MPH winds at Sunset Beach yesterday to win the World Cup of
Surfing, the second jewel in the Triple Crown of Surfing.
Paterson, who earned $5,000 for the victory, bested Hawaii's
Miles Padaca and Californians Adam Replogle and Shane Beschen in
the four-man final. "The conditions were really adverse," said
Padaca. "It wasn't typical Sunset." Next up for the world's top
surfers is the Chiemsee Gerry Lopez Pipe Masters, the third jewel
in the Triple Crown. Preliminary heats are scheduled to begin
today, waves permitting.
** Navy Accepts Aloha Bid **
The Navy Midshipmen (8-3) accepted an invitation to play
California (6-5) in the Aloha Bowl on Christmas morning at Aloha
Stadium. Said Aloha Bowl exec Lenny Klompus: "There are
obviously strong Navy ties in the Islands and having Navy here is
a major boost to our bowl. Former UH offensive coordinator Paul
Johnson, the man who introduced the spread-option attack to the
Rainbows in the Bob-Wagner era, occupies the same job for Navy.
Also on the Navy coaching staff are former UH players Ken
Niumatalolo, Brian Norwood, and Ivin Jasper.

** Wahine Top Buffs **
The UH Wahine defeated a hard-battling Colorado team, 15-12, 15-
11, 15-13, in an NCAA Mountain Regional second round match this
afternoon before a Special Events Arena sellout crowd of 10,225
and a statewide television audience. UH coach Dave Shoji said
his team did not play well despite the three-game sweep. "We're
gonna have to play better or we won't be in this tournament much
longer," he admitted. Hawaii (33-2) trailed 1-10 in the first
game before mounting a memorable comeback behind the serving and
digging of Nalani Yamashita. Colorado ended its season at 19-10.
The Wahine will now host Texas in a regional semifinal this
Thursday at the SEA. BYU, which upset the Wahine for the WAC
title last week, will square off against Pacific in the other semi.
** Third Straight Title for BYUH **
The BYU-Hawaii Wahine won their third consecutive NAIA National
Volleyball title last night, defeating host school Point Loma
Nazarene (San Diego), 15-9, 15-9, 15-10. "This is unbelievable,
said junior middle blocker Becky Laubach, who had 15 kills. "We
worked so hard for this one. To win it is just great." The
Seasiders finished the season with a 30-1 record, their only loss
coming in a pool play match on Thursday. Freshman Arlette Silva
slammed a team-high 16 kills. Silva and senior outside hitter
Daniela Carneiro earned all-tournament first team honors.
Laubach was named to the second team.
** B-Ball Bows Bow for First Time **
The UH men lost their first basketball game of the season,
falling to St. Mary's, 56-51, in the championship game of the
four-team Powerbar Invitational at the Special Events Arena. The
Bows are 4-1 while St. Mary's improved to 4-2. "We'll bounce
back," said a disappointed UH coach Riley Wallace. Things didn't
bounce the 'Bows way last night, as their vaunted pressure
defense failed to unravel the Gaels, especially point guard
Camren Sufi, who dished out six assists and scored 10 points,
including a heart-piercing three-pointer to give his team a 48-41
lead with three minutes to play. Center Brad Millard, a 7-2,
335-pound behemoth, powered in 15 points to lead St. Mary's.
Guards Alika Smith and Anthony Carter each scored 14 points for
Hawaii.
** Wahine Rebound **
After challenging her teammates to play with more heart, Nani
Cockett then led by example, boosting the UH Wahine basketball
team to 91-81 victory over Southern Mississippi yesterday
afternoon at the Special Events Arena. A junior forward from
Kamehameha, Cockett admitted she and her teammates "were chicken"
in a disappointing loss to Drake on Thursday night. "We had
people look deep inside themselves for what was missing Thursday,
including me," said Cockett. "Tonight we came out and showed we
have heart." Cockett scored 27 points and center Kendis Leeburg
chipped in 25 more to help the Wahine improve to 2-3. Southern
Mississippi (3-3) got 28 points from hot-shooting Nedra Hosey.
** Mile Crowns to O'Sullivan, Hood **
Ireland's Sonia O'Sullivan and Canada's Graham Hood strided to
their respective women's and men's Nike P.L.A.Y Waikiki Mile
titles yesterday afternoon on Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki.
O'Sullivan won the women's race in 4:26.43. Oregon's Mary
(Decker) Slaney (4:28.53) and Canada's Leah Pellis (4:29.90)
finished second and third in the 12-runner field. Then the same
the number of men toed the starting line, and 3:59.00 later, Hood
burst across the finish line tape to capture top honors just
ahead of the USA's Ron Kenah (3:59.40) and Kenya's Moses Kigen
(3:59.66).
** Sports Shorts **
Center Juergen Malbeck poured in a career-high 45 points and
grabbed 13 rebounds in Hawaii Pacific's 111-60 men's small
college basketball victory over UH-Hilo last night at the
Blaisdell Arena. The Sea Warriors improved to 3-1 with the win
while the Vulcans remain winless at 0-5.
----
Brian Ah Yat (Iolani '94) passed for 404 yards to lead Montana to
a 44-14 NCAA Division IAA quarterfinal playoff victory over East
Tennessee State yesterday at Missoula, Montana. This season, Ah
Yat led the NCAA Division IAA in touchdown passes (42) and total
offense (340.4 yards per game). He was named the Big Sky
Conference co-offensive player of the year. One of his favorite
targets is Iolani classmate Raul Pacheco.

** Seasiders Fall **
The BYU-Hawaii Wahine saw their 52-match winning streak come to
an abrupt conclusion last night when the Seasiders were upset by
unheralded Peru State (Neb.), 1-15, 5-15, 15-8, 15-9, 15-8, in a
pool play match at the NAIA National Volleyball Championship
Tournament being held in San Diego. "I'd like to take this match
and throw it in the dumpster," said an agitated BYUH coach
Wilfred Navalta after watching his team lose for the first time
since Sept. 21, 1995. Although shocking, the defeat did not
knock the Seasiders (26-1) out of the tournament as was the case
for sister-school Hawaii Pacific. BYUH will take on No. 8
Madonna (Ill.) in the single-elimination quarterfinal round
today. Meanwhile, HPU (17-9) was eliminated from further
competition after losing matches to Biola and Western Oregon
yesterday.
** Wahine Hope to Snuff Buffs **
The UH Wahine will face a small, defensive-minded Colorado team
in an NCAA Mountain Regional second round match on Sunday at a
sold-out Special Events Arena. The unranked Buffs (19-9) earned
the opportunity to meet the fifth-ranked Wahine (32-2) by
upending No. 23 Oral Roberts on Wednesday night. "They run a
nice attack," said UH coach Dave Shoji, who said he tried to
recruit every one of Colorado's starters when they were seniors
in high school. "We have six players that all carry themselves
well," said CU assistant coach Pi'i Aiu, a 1981 graduate of
Kamehameha. Last week, Colorado concluded regular season play by
upsetting No. 10 Texas in Austin. "They're dangerous," said
Shoji of Sunday's foe. "We're definitely not taking them
lightly."
** Drake Drubs Wahine Cagers **
The UH Wahine basketball team, playing "gutless and heartless"
according to forward Nani Cockett, sustained a disappointing 78-
74 overtime loss to Drake last night in front of 535 fans at the
Special Events Arena. "We were chicken out there," said Cockett,
who scored 15 points and had five steals. "Coach (Vince Goo)
said he knew we'd lose the game." Hawaii forged a lead as large
as 12 points midway through the second half. Then came the
collapse. Behind the spirited play of Kiersten Miller, who poured
in a game-high 26 points, the Bulldogs rallied to tie the score
at 65-all at the end of regulation and outscored the Wahine 13-9
in overtime to improve to 3-1 on the season. Hawaii fell to 1-3.
** Top Milers Here **
Some of the world's best distance runners will be competing in
the Nike P.L.A.Y. Waikiki Mile tomorrow afternoon. At around
4:30, twelve top-notch women milers, including defending champion
Regina Jacobs (4:30.48 last year), will line up on the starting
line in Waikiki. After they're finished, a dozen world-class men
will vie for the men's crown on the same down-and-back course on
Kalakaua Avenue.
** B-Ball Bows Face Hornet Swarm **
The UH men's basketball team (3-0) will take on a smallish,
athletic Alabama State team in an opening round game of the
Powerbar Invitational tonight at the Special Events Arena.
With their tallest starter only 6-6, the visiting Hornets rely on
a pressing, trapping defense, and a fast-break offensive attack.
"If they're hitting their outside shots, it's going to be tough
for us," said UH assistant and head scout Jeff Law. "Their
quickness could cause problems for our big guys." St. Mary's and
McNeese State round out the four-team tournament.

** Three 'Bows Hele **
Citing homesickness as the reason, three players from the
University of Hawaii football team have requested and been
granted scholarship releases. The three--quarterback Josh
Skinner, receiver Dillan Micus, and defensive lineman Kasey
Jackson--say they will transfer to mainland schools closer to
home. Skinner, a backup who saw some playing time this season,
and Micus, the 'Bows top receiver in 1996, will play for Northern
Colorado, a Division II school. Jackson, one of the strongest
players on the team, will transfer to Dixie Junior College.
"It's unfortunate when anybody decides to leave," said UH coach
Fred vonAppen. "We wish them the best."
** Seasiders, Sea Warriors Win **
Hawaii Pacific won a match, and BYU-Hawaii won a pair at the
opening day of competition at the NAIA National Volleyball
Championship Tournament at Point Loma Nazarene College in San
Diego. HPU outbattled Northwestern (Iowa), 15-6, 11-15, 12-15,
15-6, 15-8, and the two-time defending national champion BYUH
Seasiders topped Hastings, 5, 13, and 1, and host Point Loma
Nazarene, 9, 6, and 12. Pool play continues today with HPU
playing two matches and BYUH one. The top eight teams will
qualify for tomorrow's quarterfinal round.
** Big Numbers for Honolulu Marathon **
The Honolulu Marathon had the most finishers of any marathons
held in the United States last year. A total of 27,022 runners
completed the Honolulu event, 54 more than the total completers
at the New York Marathon. Stacked up against all the footraces
of any distance, the Honolulu Marathon ranked seventh in total
finishers. San Francisco's 12-kilometer Bay-to-Breakers race
ranked first with 55,258 finishers. The '96 Honolulu Marathon is
set for this Sunday. To date, 28,527 entries have been received
for the event.
** 'Bow Basketball Beat **
The UH men (3-0) will take on Alabama State in a first-round game
of the four-team Powerbar Men's Basketball Invitational tomorrow
night at the Special Events Arena. Head coach Riley Wallace has
put together what looks to be a cohesive and hardworking team,
led by guards Anthony Carter and Alika Smith, forward Micah
Kroeger, and center Seth Sundberg. St. Mary's and McNeese State
will square off in another tournament first round game.
----
Meanwhile, after completing last weekend's talent-laden UH Wahine
Classic with a win and two losses, Hawaii's female hoopsters
(1-2) will play Drake (2-1) tonight and Southern Mississippi (3-
1) on Saturday. Forward Nani Cockett was named Western Athletic
Conference player of the week. She averaged over 20 points per
game in the Wahine Classic.

Four surfers from Hawaii--Melissa Proud, Megan Abubo, Keala
Kennelly, and Melanie Bartels--advanced to the round of 16 at the
Quiksilver Women's Pro meet yesterday at Sunset Beach.
Meanwhile, the world's top men were also in action in Sunset's 3-
to 5-foot waves yesterday. Eight Hawaii surfers made it past the
second round of the World Cup of Surfing, the second jewel of
Triple Crown of Surfing. Last month, Hawaii's Kaipo Jaquias won
the first jewel, the OP Pro, at Haleiwa's Ali'i Beach.
----
The UH Wahine volleyball team will face Colorado this Sunday in
an NCAA Mountain Regional second round match at the Special
Events Arena. Colorado (19-9) defeated Oral Roberts last night
at Boulder, Colo. to earn the right to fifth-ranked Wahine
(32-2). About 1,900 seats remain for the match and next week's
regional semifinals and final, but none of those are expected to
last after ticket sales today.
----
University of Hawaii football player Eddie Klaneski and Hawaii
Pacific University cross country runner Sylvia Fisher were named
sportspersons of the month for November. Klaneski, a junior
defensive back, was the only Rainbow to earn first-team All-WAC
honors. Fisher, a senior, finished 20th at the NAIA cross
country national championships, earning All-America recognition
as a result.

** Hauoli La Hanau e Kawika **
Dave Shoji celebrates his 50th birthday today and undoubtedly
would like no better gift from his University of Hawaii Wahine
volleyball team than an NCAA crown. Shoji has compiled a 621-123
won-loss record in 22 seasons at UH and has directed the Wahine
to four national titles. In his career, he has taken the Hawaii
program from virtual club status and transformed it into a
powerhouse, attracting some of the country's best players and
drawing more fans per match--over 8,000--than any other.
Starting at midnight last night, a legion of fans began lining up
to purchase tickets for the Wahine's NCAA regional playoff match
on Sunday at the 10,225-seat Special Events Arena. A sellout is
inevitable. "This thing has gotten so big it's overwhelming to
me," said Shoji.
** Cougars to Aloha? **
Brigham Young University is one of several teams on the dance
card of Aloha Bowl officials. Whether the Cougars are offered an
invitation to the Christmas Day clash depends on the outcome of
games this weekend. Other teams being considered for the Aloha
Bowl are Texas Tech, Navy, Army, and Michigan State. Notre Dame
is also being considered but officials from that school said the
Irish are seeking a more illustrious opponent than unranked
California (6-5), which has already accepted an Aloha Bowl berth.
Meanwhile, University of Hawaii officials are in the unusual
position of rooting for the Cougars' bid to land a bowl berth.
If BYU beats Wyoming this Saturday, the Cougars could land a spot
in either of two Bowls--Fiesta or Cotton, which could equate to a
windfall of up to $467,000 for every team in the Western Athletic
Conference, including UH. "I'm all for them," said Hawaii
athletic director Hugh Yoshida.
** BYU Seeks Third Straight Title **
Two-time defending champion BYU-Hawaii begins its three-peat
quest today as the NAIA Volleyball National Championship
Tournament gets underway today at Point Loma Nazarene College Gym
in San Diego. The Lady Seasiders, undefeated this season and
seeded first in the tournament, will take on Hastings (Neb.) and
Point Loma Nazarene today. Hawaii Pacific is also entered in the
tournament. The Sea Warriors will face Northwestern (Iowa)
today. The tournament continues tomorrow and Friday, concluding
with semifinal and championship matches on Saturday.
** Prep All-Star Game Set **
Most of Oahu's top high school football seniors will participate
in the Goodwill Classic Football game next Friday, Dec. 13, at
Aloha Stadium. Players from OIA town and windward schools will
team with players from St. Louis, Pac-Five, and Iolani on the
East squad. McKinley's David Tanuvasa will coach the team. The
East will take on a West team comprised of players from OIA
central and leeward schools along with gridders from Punahou,
Kamehameha, and Damien. Damien's Mel Andres will direct the
West.

The Zeal Optics World Cup of Surfing, the second jewel in the
Triple Crown of Surfing, finally got going yesterday at Sunset
Beach after a week of postponements because of small waves. Ten
Hawaii surfers negotiated 3- to 5-foot surf to advance to the
second round. At the same site, the world's top wahine wave
riders began competition in the Quiksilver Women's Pro event.
----
BYU-Hawaii and Chaminade both won men's college basketball games
last night. The Seasiders (7-0) edged Yonsei of Korea, 69-68,
while the Silverswords (1-3) topped Carleton (Minn.), 75-62.
----
UH baseball coach Les Murakami yesterday announced that shortstop
Shaheed Nelloms from McNair High School of Decatur, Ga. has
signed a letter of intent to play for the Rainbows. Nelloms is a
5-11, 163-pounder and has been named to several national all-star
squads. He will enter UH next fall.

** Marathon Set for Sunday **
This Sunday, thousands of runners will flock to the Ala Moana
Park starting line of the 24th Honolulu Marathon. The race
record for the 26.2-mile race is 2:11:43 set by Kenya's Ibrahim
Hussein. The Netherlands' Karla Beurskens holds the women's
record of 2:31:01. Both times were recorded in 1986 when
temperatures dipped into the upper-50s in normally warm and humid
Honolulu. Those times are well off the world record clockings of
2:06:50 for men, set by Ethiopia's Belayneh Densimo in 1988, and
2:21:06 for women, recorded by Norway's Ingrid Kristinasen in
1985.
** Sid Signs with 'stros **
Local boy Sid Fernandez has signed a one-year contract to play
for the Houston Astros next season. The hard-throwing southpaw
inked a deal that will pay him a base salary of $375,000 with
incentives that could amount to over $800,000 in additional pay.
Fernandez, a former Kaiser High star, has an 113-96 win-loss
record in a career that has spanned 15 seasons in the Big
Leagues. He played for Philadelphia the past two years but
missed large chunks of both seasons because of injuries.
** Tourney Tickets Sale Begins Tomorrow **
Local volleyball fans are expected to snatch up tickets for the
upcoming NCAA Mountain Regional in quick order when they go on
sale 8 a.m. tomorrow morning at the Special Events Arena box
office. UH officials warned fans that campus security will
prevent ticket buyers from lining up before midnight tonight.
The recipient of a first-round bye, the Wahine (32-2) will take
on the winner of the Oral Roberts/Colorado match in a second
round game this Sunday at the SEA.
** Irish Say No to Aloha **
Notre Dame is likely to turn down a bid to play in the Aloha Bowl
if one is tendered. Mike Wadsworth, Notre Dame's athletic
director, said his school is looking for a bowl that can offer
them a quality opponent to give the Irish a chance to improve on
their No. 18 ranking. California of the Pac-10, 6-5 and
unranked, has already accepted an Aloha Bowl bid. If the Irish
turn down an offer as expected, Texas Tech is the next apple in
the eye of Aloha Bowl director Lenny Klompus. "We would love to
have Texas Tech," he said. "But so would a lot of other bowls."
The nationally televised game will be played at Aloha Stadium on
Christmas morning.
----
In a related story, former Kamehameha player Drake Parker is a
starter on the offensive line for California. A 6-foot-4, 290-
pound junior, Parker is the smallest player on a Golden Bears'
front five that averages 6-5 and 303 pounds. He is set to earn a
degree in social welfare in May. Meanwhile, Parker says he looks
forward to returning to the islands with his Cal teammates in
tow. "They're all curious about the plate lunches because I'm
always talking about 'em," he said.

** Wahine Lose, Still Get Host Spot **
The top-seeded Hawaii was upset by BYU in the WAC women's
volleyball tournament championship match on Saturday in Las
Vegas, but despite the loss, the Wahine will still host an NCAA
regional. On Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden, the Cougars
weather being a 15-6 Wahine blitz in the first game to score a 6-
15, 15-11, 15-13, 16-18, 15-8 upset victory. "This is no
surprise to anyone our team," said the Cougars' Gale Johnson, who
torched Hawaii with 27 kills. Last night, Hawaii learned it
would host an NCAA Mountain Regional second round tournament
match against either Oral Roberts (27-4) or Colorado (18-9) this
Sunday at the Special Events Arena. The regional semifinals and
finals will also be held at the Special Events Arena on Thursday
and Friday, Dec. 12-13. BYU also landed a spot in the Mountain
Regional.
----
Joselyn Robins re-injured her ankle in the BYU match. Her status
for the upcoming tournament is unknown.
** Dane-led Badgers Rout 'Bows **
Ron "Great" Dayne bulled and dashed his way to 339 rushing yards
and four touchdowns in Wisconsin's 59-10 blasting of the
University of Hawaii on Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. Dayne,
a 5-10, 260 pounder, broke Herschel Walker's single season
freshman records for most yards (1,863) and carries (295). "He's
the toughest running back we've faced this year," said defensive
back Eddie Klaneski, Hawaii's lone All-WAC first-teamer. "Their
line was pancaking everybody and (the defensive backs) were
having a hard time bringing him down." The Rainbows ended the
season at 2-10. UH coach Fred vonAppen vowed he'd "push the
envelope in every area" to avoid anything close to a repeat
performance next season. VonAppen said making coaching
reassignments and "improving the talent base of this team" are in
the works.
** UH Basketball News **
The UH men won and the Wahine lost in college basketball
tournament action yesterday at the Special Events Arena. The
Kane easily defeated Portland, 83-64, in the championship game of
the four-team United Airlines Tipoff Classic last night. Former
Kalaheo High star Alika Smith scored 22 points for the Rainbows

the third-place game of the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Basketball
Classic. Nani Cockett scored 14 points to lead Hawaii (1-2). In
the tournament championship game, top-ranked Stanford edged
Michigan, 77-74, to claim the title.

Former Hawaii high school football players Ink Aleaga (Maryknoll
/Pac-Five '91) and Olin Kruetz (St. Louis '95) earned spots on
this season's All-Pac 10 first team. Both play for the
University of Washington. Aleaga, a senior outside linebacker,
record 79 tackles, eight for losses, for the Huskies. Kruetz had
consistently outstanding performances as Washington's starting
center. "He has a special knack," said offensive line coach
Steve Morton.

** Saints Rule Again **
On a night when their vaunted offense struggled, the St. Louis
Crusaders used a magnificent defensive effort to defeat Waianae,
7-0, in Prep Bowl XXIV last night at Aloha Stadium. A Prep Bowl
record-low crowd of 16,094 saw the Saints when their 11th
consecutive Prep Bowl championship. The game's only scoring came
early in the second quarter when Crusader quarterback Jason
Gesser hit Gordon Schilling in the right flat on a split end
screen. Schilling juked and dashed past several diving Searider
defenders for a 35-yard touchdown. Meanwhile, defense dominated
play, the Crusaders limiting Waianae to just 33 yards of total
offense. Tackle Tony Tata (10 stops, three for losses) was
particularly effective. The Seariders had a chance to tie the
score early in the fourth quarter when they had a first and goal
on the Crusader five. But the Saint defense would not yield any
more yards.
** Wahine Advance to WAC Final **
Robyn Ah Mow played and Therese Crawford and Angelica Ljungquist
ripped in Hawaii's 15-4, 15-8, 15-2 Western Athletic Conference
Tournament semifinal victory over New Mexico last night at the
MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas. Ah Mow, the Wahine's All-American
setter, was listed as questionable going into the match because
of a bruised sciatic nerve injury incurred in Wednesday's
quarterfinal win over Rice. However, she played without a sign
of being hampered, dishing out a match-high 38 assists while
quarterbacking the Wahine offense. Ah Mow's primary recipients
were Crawford (17 kills) and Ljungquist (11), who consistently
pounded balls over the Lobo block. A crowd of 3,511, the
majority cheering for the Wahine, was in attendance. Hawaii (31-
1) will take on Brigham Young (24-5) today at noon HST for the
WAC title.
** 'Bows Tame Titans **
Hawaii rallied from a 12-point first half hole it dug for itself
to notch a 80-68 victory over Detroit-Mercy in a first round game
of the Tipoff Basketball Classic last night at the Special Events
Arena. The 'Bows jumped out to a double digit lead to open the
game then saw their shooting touch wobble. The result--a 38-26
lead for the visiting Titans three minutes before the half.
Sparked by guards Anthony Carter (23 points) and Alika Smith

winner over Austin Peay in another first round game last night.

** UH Men To Play Exhibitions **
Coach Mike Wilton and his Yuval Katz-less UH men's volleyball
team will take on Stanford in three exhibition matches this
weekend. Tonight the Cardinal and Bows will square off at Waimea
High School Gym on Kauai. Tomorrow, the teams will meet at
Waiakea High Gym in Hilo. Friday, they will play at the Old
Airport Gym in Kona. The Bows will be playing sans their two
leading players from last season--outside hitter Yuval Katz
(turned pro) and setter Eric Pichel (completed eligibility).
Starters Sivan Leoni, Jason Ring, Naveh Milo, and Rick Tune
return. Stanford is led by Punahou grad Mike Lambert, a starter
on the U.S. Olympic team this summer at Atlanta.
** WAC Honors to Klaneski **
Defensive back Eddie Klaneski is the lone Rainbow chosen to the
All Western Athletic Conference football all-star first team. A
slotback in 1995, Klaneski asked to switch to defensive back this
season, where he leads the team in tackles (102), interceptions
(4), fumble recoveries (3), and punt returns (9.2 yards per
return). Klaneski said the honor was "something I never
expected, but something I worked hard for." Former St. Louis
High star Chris Fuamatu-Maafala, now a starting running back for
Utah, also earned first team honors.

** Community Service for Freitas, Jacobs **
UH football coach Fred vonAppen said he will require quarterback
Glenn Freitas and redshirt running back Quincy Jacobs to perform
community service as punishment for leaving the Rainbow bench
area and entering the stands at Aloha Stadium in the latter part
of the UH-BYU game. The two players claimed they rushed to the
aid of Freitas' family and Thea vonAppen, the coach's wife, who
were in the area where fans were brawling. Last week, a
university investigative committee found the players not guilty
of any major misconduct and gave VonAppen the authority to mete
out punishment as he saw fit. Of his decision, vonAppen said,
"We're not going to do the easiest. We're not going to do the
cheapest. We're going to do what's right." VonAppen said
suspending the players wouldn't be appropriate because the
players committed no verifiable offense other than leaving the
team area.
** Maui Tourney Underway **
Chaminade battled hard but eventually succumbed to a physically
superior UMass team in an opening round game of the Maui

defeated the Silverswords, 59-48. Guard Darnell Clavon poured in
19 points to keep the 'Swords close. Man-mountain Tyrone Weeks
(6-7, 260 pounds) powered his way to 19 points for the Minutemen.
In other tourney games, Virginia crushed South Carolina, 93-70,

** Sumo Elite Spot for Yamato? **
After finishing the Kyushu Basho with an 11-4 record in the juryo
(second-highest) division, Yamato, also known as George Kalima of
Waimanalo, will likely earn a spot in the 36-man makuuchi
division, sumo's highest. A ranking committee is scheduled to
meet tomorrow to determine which wrestlers go where. According
to members of the Japanese press, Yamato is almost certain to
earn promotion to makuuchi, making him the fifth rikishi from
Hawaii to gain the sport's topmost echelon. "I don't think it
has sunk in yet," said Kalima. "The sports writers have been
telling me I'm in and not to worry, so it must be true."

** State Title to Buffanblu **
Punahou parlayed Tehani Miyashiro's kills and Erin Berg's setting
and serving into a 15-8, 15-5 victory over McKinley in the title
game of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Girls'
Volleyball Championships last night at the Buffanblu's gym.
Punahou last won the state title in 1993. Miyashiro, a freshman
starter on that 1993 squad, pounded a match-high 16 kills last
night. She has verbally committed to play for the University of
Hawaii Wahine next season. Berg, a junior setter, ran the
Buffanblu offense to near perfection and devastated the Tigers
with an intimidating jump serve. She registered eight of
Punahou's fifteen aces. In an earlier match, University High
defeated Kamehameha for third place.
** Yusho to Musashimaru **
Ozeki Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani) captured his
second-ever tournament championship by winning three straight
wrestle-off bouts last night at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament
in Fukuoka, Japan. The extra matches were necessary after five
rikishi, including grand champion Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad
Rowan) finished the 15-match tournament with 11-4 records.
Entering the final night of the tournament, Musashimaru and
fellow ozeki Wakanohana had 11-3 records, both lost, Musashimaru
to Takanonami and Wakanohana to Akebono. Those four, plus
sekiwake Kaio, ended up at 11-4, forcing a mini-tournament to
determine the overall winner. Musashimaru then defeated
Wakanohana, Akebono, and Takanonami in succession to earn the
title.
** Wahine Finish Perfect in WAC **
After dispatching Fresno State, 9, 2 and 7, the University of
Wahine volleyball team finished regular season play last night

Ljungquist (10) collaborate for 22 kills.
** Smith to Lead 'Bows **
Former Kalaheo High School star Alika Smith is firmly entrenched
in the University of Hawaii basketball team's starting lineup.
"He's made steps to become a really good player," said UH coach
Riley Wallace. Smith, the son of Kalaheo High coach Pete Smith,
said he's always felt compelled to perform well because of his
dad's position. "I had to bust my butt because if I didn't
someone who thinks he's better would assume that I'm playing only
because I'm the coach's son." Smith and his UH teammates will
strut their stuff when they play Texas-Pan American on Tuesday
night at the Special Events Arena.

** No Major Misconduct by Freitas, Jacobs, says Committee **
The fates of University of Hawaii football players Glenn Freitas
and Quincy Jacobs now lay in the hands of head coach Fred
vonAppen after a university review committee ruled that the
actions of the duo at the UH-BYU game were not instances of
"major misconduct." Freitas, the Rainbows' starting quarterback,
and Jacobs, a redshirt running back, both entered the stands
behind the UH bench when brawls erupted. Freitas said he did so
to protect family members seated in the area. Jacobs, shown
throwing what appeared to be two punches in television replays of
the melee, was acting as peacemaker and protector, according to
Thea vonAppen, the wife of the UH coach who testified on Jacobs'
behalf.
** Wahine Spank Spartans **
With a throng of vocal supporters urging them on, the University
of Hawaii Wahine volleyball team cruised to an impressive 15-1,

Calif. "We hit with authority," said Hawaii coach Dave Shoji.
The Wahine registered a .481 kill percentage for the match with
Angelica Ljungquist (14 kills) and Therese Crawford (12) sparking
the attack. The win boosted the Wahine's record to 28-1 overall
and 15-0 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Spartans
dropped to 10-18 and 5-10. UH will conclude its regular season
schedule with a road match against Fresno State tonight. "We

** Ruling Due on Freitas, Jacobs **
A University of Hawaii advisory board will meet today to decide
what to do about the case of two UH football players who entered
the spectator area of Aloha Stadium at last Saturday night's UH-
BYU football game. The players, starting quarterback Glenn
Freitas and redshirt running back Quincy Jacobs, maintain that
they did not throw any blows with fighting fans when the two
gridders entered the stands behind the UH bench that night.
Witness accounts seem to verify Freitas' and Jacobs' innocence.
However, a clip from a television broadcast shows Jacobs winding
up and throwing an apparent punch into a mass of brawling
spectators. Jacobs refused to comment on the matter.
** Sumo Day 13 Report **
For the second straight night, Akebono (Chad Rowan of Waimanalo)
and Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani of Waianae) lost their bouts at
the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament. With a pair of matches
remaining, the two are now 10-3 and tied with Wakanohana and Kaio
for the tourney lead. Yesterday, Akebono went tumbling to the
ground after attacking and missing a side-stepping Takatoriki
(6-7). In the match right before it, Wakanohana outlasted
Musashimaru, thrusting down his bigger foe with an arm throw
after a short stalemate. In an earlier match, Konishiki lost to
Shikishima and faces demotion in the next tournament after
falling to 5-8.
** OP Wahine Title to Aussie **
Australian Layne Beachley outsurfed the world's top wahine

good shot.'" She did, topping Tahiti's Patricia Rossi and
Florida's Lisa Anderson in the final. Beachley earned $2,000 for
the win. Rochelle Ballard and Megan Abubo were Hawaii's top

** Wahine Honored **
Angelica Ljungquist was named player of the year, Dave Shoji
coach of the year, and three other UH Wahine players were named
to the All-Western Athletic Conference Pacific Division first
team yesterday. Joining Ljungquist, a 6-2 senior middle blocker,
on the first team are teammates Robyn Ah Mow (setter), Therese
Crawford (outside hitter), and Nalani Yamashita (defensive
specialist). Colorado State's Rainie Rogers and Judy Rexroth and
San Diego State's Martina Vitkova round out the first team.
Hawaii's Joselyn Robins and Cia Goods were named to the second
team.
** Bows Fly Over Jiangsu **
Seven players scored in double figures for Hawaii in their 122-
101 preseason exhibition victory over Jiangsu of China last night
at the Special Events Arena. Leading the way with 18 points was
highly heralded newcomer Anthony Carter, a 6-foot guard with a
40-inch vertical jump. Six of the eight field goals he scored
were slam dunks. "Oh, man, he's a great athlete," said Jiangsu
forward John Spencer. "I haven't seen a guy like that for a long
time." Despite the win, Hawaii appears vulnerable defensively
and on the boards. "We gave up way too much," said UH coach
Riley Wallace. "But the hustle and attitude were there."
** Sumo Day 11 Results **
Yokozuna (grand champion) Akebono and ozeki (champion)
Musashimaru still share the lead of the Kyushu Grand Sumo

8-3. A third Hawaii wrestler, Konishiki (Salevaa Atisanoe of
Nanakuli), dropped to 4-7 following a loss to Daishi (6-5).
** Freitas, Jacobs Didn't Beef **
Witness accounts of the fights in the stands at Saturday night's
UH-BYU football game indicate that neither quarterback Glenn
Freitas nor redshirt running back Quincy Jacobs threw any blows
during the scuffles. Both had entered the stands from the UH
bench area, Jacobs to protect Thea vonAppen, the wife of UH coach
Fred vonAppen, and Freitas to protect members of his family.
While the duo will probably be cleared of any criminal action,
both face possible school-imposed sanctions for leaving the
playing field and entering the spectator area.
** Neighbor Island Title Game Set **
Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Waiakea (13-0)
will travel to the Garden Island to face Kauai Interscholastic
Federation champion Waimea (6-1) in the title game of the
Neighbor Island Football Championship on Friday night at Hanapepe
Ball Park. Coached by Tim Lino, the Warriors rolled to their
third consecutive BIIF title this season. They defeated MIL
champion Maui, 21-14, in a first round game last week. Leading
the Waiakea charge in 1996 is quarterback Johnny Young, who
passed for 1,342 yards and rushed for 423 more. Running backs
Chevas Lamoya and Ernie Shim average 9.8 and 7.1 yards per carry,
respectively. Waimea is led by all-around wizard Sean Jardin, a
5-7, 155-pounder who plays running back (190-yard average per
game), defensive back, kick returner, kicker, and punter for Na
Menehune. "He's quite an athlete," said Lino.

Much to the disappoint of coach Glennie Adams, Chaminade was not
extended a bid to the NCAA Division II National Championship
Tournament despite a 21-9 record and a Pacific West Conference
title under its belt. "It's borderline devastation," said Adams
of the snub.
