** Downgrading Out of the Question, says Mortimer **
University of Hawaii president Kenneth Mortimer said he wants UH
sports teams to continue to compete on the NCAA Division I level.
His remarks came following athletic director Hugh Yoshida's
suggestion that Rainbow sports programs downgrade to Division II
because of waning financial support. "The goal is to compete in
Division I," said Mortimer. "If there's any doubt where the
president stands, I've given that answer, and I'll give it
again." Yoshida, who has come under fire in recent weeks,
particularly from head football coach Fred vonAppen, declined
comment.
** Miyashiro Leads Puns **
Punahou is the odds-on favorite to win this year's state high
school girls' volleyball title, and outside hitter Tehani
Miyashiro is a big reason why. A powerful but soft-spoken 5-
foot-7 senior, Miyashiro was an all-state selection last season
and is now being recruited by a host of colleges, including the
University of Hawaii. "As a hitter, she's Division I material as
is," said Punahou coach Diana McKibbin as her team prepared for a
match against Sacred Hearts today. "For a Division I team that's
looking for a setter, I think she could settle into that
position." Miyashiro's parents are former UH Wahine player Joey
Akeo and Kalani High athletic director Gordon Miyashiro.
** Jube Cited **
Hawaii Pacific University soccer player Cesar Jube has been named
the NAIA National Player of the Week for his recent performances.
A sophomore from Brazil, Jube scored 10 goals in four matches
last week. His 19 goals this season and 29 in his career at HPU
are both school records. "He's a great talent," said HPU coach
Frank Doyle. "He really could play on another level. His ball
control is amazing." The Sea Warriors are 7-1 with 10 regular
season matches remaining.
** Small College Women's Volleyball **
BYU-Hawaii 13-0
Hawaii Pacific 8-2
Chaminade 10-3
UH-Hilo 4-5
----
BYU-Hawaii advanced from 13th to 3rd in the NAIA Top 20 Poll
released today. The Seasiders, two-time defending NAIA champions
and currently on a 39-match winning streak, will take on
Chaminade in a home-and-home series tomorrow and Friday. "It's
going to take a great game from us to beat them," said Chaminade
coach Glennie Adams.
----
Chaminade middle-blocker Boo Arnold has been named HIAC Player of
the Week. A 5-11 freshman from Kamehameha, Arnold amassed 19
kills, 23 digs, and 15 blocks in two matches against Seattle
Pacific last week.

** Bows to Face Bulldogs **
Still basking in the glow of their first victory of the season,
the University of Hawaii Rainbows (1-3) must now prepare for
their roadtrip of the season--a Saturday meeting against Fresno
State (0-3) at Fresno. UH has not won there since 1973. Hawaii
coach Fred vonAppen said he was pleased with the performances of
the offensive line, running back Carlos Shaw (24 carries for 104
yards), quarterback Glenn Freitas, and the entire defensive unit
in the Rainbows' 20-14 triumph over Boise State. "We're not out
of the woods by any means," cautioned vonAppen.
** Distance Victory for Outrigger **
Outrigger Canoe Club paddled to victory in the 34-mile Skippy
Kamakawiwo'ole Long Distance Canoe Race yesterday. The race
began at Maunalua Bay in Hawaii Kai and ended at Nanakuli Beach
Park. Outrigger, with a crew that included Todd Bradley, Walter
Guild, Courtney Seto, Mark Rigg, Bruce Black, Marc Haine, Bill
Pratt, Clayton Chee, and Chris Kincaid, posted a winning time of
3 hours, 55 minutes, 2 seconds. Waikiki Surf Club (3:59:11),
Waikiki Beach Boys (4:06:04), Kai Opua (4:15:17), and Hawaiian
Canoe Club (4:16:56) rounded out the top five. Race favorite and
defending Molokai-to-Oahu champion Lanikai, after gambling on a
nearshore route, finished sixth in 4:18:43.

** Grid Bows Win First of Season **
Glenn Freitas returned to the starting lineup and passed for a
career-high 154 yards to lead the University of Hawaii football
team to a 20-14 victory over Boise State last night at Aloha
Stadium. It was the Rainbows' first win of the season and Fred
vonAppen's initial triumph as a head coach. A crowd of 29,140
was in attendance. "This is special," said Freitas, who missed
the past two games because of his shoulder and index finger on
his throwing arm. "I want to celebrate this with the people who
have been with us through the good and bad times." For the most
part, Hawaii dominated the game, outgaining the Broncos in total
yards, 391 to 242. But it took a crucial fourth quarter stop by
the Rainbow defense to seal the win. Next up for UH (1-3) is
Fresno State (0-3) this coming Saturday at Fresno, Calif.
** Wahine Take Two **
The top-ranked UH Wahine volleyball team won its 11th and 12th
games of the season and first two as a new member of the Western
Athletic Conference on Friday and Saturday at the Special Events
Arena. On Friday night, the Wahine topped San Jose State, 16-14,
15-3, 15-9 before a crowd of 6,248. All America middle blocker
registered 19 kills in the triumph. Yesterday afternoon, 5,273
fans were on hand to see Hawaii (12-0) defeat San Jose State, 15-
6, 15-3, 15-11. Joselyn Robins returned to the starting lineup
after missing the last several matches with an ankle injury. She
contributed six kills and two blocks. Ljungquist had a team-high
9 kills.
** Leoni, Milo Suspended **
UH men's volleyball players Sivan Leoni and Naveh Milo will be
suspended for the first two games of the coming season for
violating an "extra-benefit" rule. This past summer, the two
players attended a dinner paid for by three UH boosters.
According to NCAA rules, such an occurrence is a no-no. The
dinner was supposedly a going-away party held in honor of former
teammate Yuval Katz. "We asked the boosters if it was legal,"
said Leoni, "and they said, 'Yeah, because it's for Yuval, not
for you guys.'" The two players have also been ordered to write
a letter of apology, pay back the boosters, and speak to other UH
athletes at a NCAA rules meeting.
** Takanohana Finishes 15-0 **
Grand champion Takanohana finished the Tokyo Fall Grand Sumo
Tournament with an unblemished 15-0 mark. He now has won four
straight tournaments and sixteen overall. Musashimaru (Waianae's
Fiamalu Penitani), Wakanohana, and Takatoriki finished in a tie
for the runner-up spot with 11-4 records. Grand champion Akebono
(Waimanalo's Chad Rowan) finished 10-5, and maegashira 4
Konishiki (Nanakuli's Salevaa Atisanoe) 4-11.

** Yoshida Speaks **
Stopping just short of shouting for help, University of Hawaii
athletic director Hugh Yoshida addressed the media yesterday to
outline the financial plight faced by UH sports programs. "The
very existence of Division I athletics (at UH) is being
threatened," he said. "It is my best judgment that we can't
operate at status quo and expect to continue at the Division I
level." Yoshida said he is open to suggestions from the public.
UH president Kenneth Mortimer, who earlier this year mandated
that the athletic department be self-sufficient by 1998, attended
yesterday's press conference.
** Agbayani Quits; Two Starters Out **
Starting running back Brendyn Agbayani quit the UH football team,
saying he had lost the drive to play and wanted to concentrate on
his studies. The 1992 Hawaii high school football player of the
year while playing for St. Louis, Agbayani never made the splash
people expected while a Rainbow. Right out of high school, he
was deemed academically ineligible. He redshirted in 1994 and
made spot appearances last season. This season, he started at
running back in Hawaii's first three games, leading the Rainbows
in rushing. In other bleak news for the 0-3 'Bows, two other
starters will not suit up for tomorrow night's game against Boise
State because of injury. Center Shane Oliveira (back and
achilles) and cornerback Doe Henderson (knee) will not play
against the Broncos. "Things don't look too good for us," said
head coach Fred vonAppen. "But we're not going to forfeit."
** Tourney Title to Takanohana **
With two bouts remaining, grand Takanohana clinched the
championship of the 15-day Tokyo Fall Grand Sumo Tournament.
Takanohana stands at 13-0 after defeating Kaio (7-6). His
closest pursuers, his brother Wakanohana, and Hawaii's
Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani of Waianae), are 10-3. Wakanohana
defeated Akebono (9-4), also known as Chad Rowan of Waimanalo
while Musashimaru lost to Takatorki (9-4). A third rikishi from
the Islands, Konishiki (Salevaa Atisanoe of Nanakuli), dropped to
3-10 after losing to Aogiyama (6-7).
** UH Wahine Take on Spartans **
The top-ranked UH Wahine (10-0) will play its first-ever Western
Athletic Conference women's volleyball matches this weekend when
they take on Fresno State (10-2) tonight and San Jose State (4-6)
tomorrow at the Special Events Arena. Hawaii coach Dave Shoji
said senior outside hitter Joselyn Robins may return to the
starting lineup tonight after missing the last four matches with
an ankle injury. "She has to be as close to 100 percent as
possible for me to start her," said Shoji. Robins says her ankle
is about 90 percent healed. Freshman Aven Lee will start if
Robins cannot.

** Mortimer: No Extra Bucks for UH Sports **
University of Hawaii president Kenneth Mortimer said that no
extra money exists to supplement the current University of Hawaii
athletic budget. Mortimer's comments came as a result of UH head
football coach Fred vonAppen's remarks about the below-par
support his program is receiving. Said Mortimer: "There's a
limit to what the state can afford. The money is not there."
The UH president suggested that if the UH athletic department
needs extra money, it should attempt to raise funds through
marketing and private fund-raising. Governor Ben Cayetano said
he was willing to help vonAppen and the athletic department but
added that direct financial assistance wasn't likely.
** Good to Go, says Freitas **
After sitting out the last two games with a bruised right
shoulder and sprained finger, quarterback Glenn Freitas says he's
ready to return to the starting lineup for the University of
Hawaii football team's game against Boise State on Saturday night
at Aloha Stadium. "This is my team," said Freitas, "and I want
to be out there leading the team. I won the starting job, and
the starting quarterback's job isn't on the bench. I'm supposed
to be on the field leading the team." Offensive coordinator Guy
Benjamin said Freitas will start if he's healthy. The Rainbows
are 0-3.
** Sumo Day 12 Report **
Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani) all but eliminated grand
champion Akebono from winning the Tokyo Fall Grand Sumo
Tournament title by defeating the yokozuna last night. After an
initial stalemate, Musashimaru (10-2) threw down Akebono (9-3) at
the ring's edge. Meanwhile, grand champion Takanohana (12-0)
moved a step closer to his fourth straight tournament title by
overpowering Musoyama (6-6). In an earlier bout, Konishiki
(Salevaa Atisanoe of Nanakuli) improved to 3-9 by shoving out
Kenko (2-10).
** Brazilians Spark BYUH **
Fueled by its pipeline to Brazil, the BYU-Hawaii women's
volleyball team is making a strong bid to repeat as NAIA
national champions this season. Four Brazilians are in the
Seasiders' starting lineup, including returning starters Daniela
Carneiro and Ana Alves, and freshmen Arlete Silva and Juliana
Lima. BYUH is 12-0 this season and will take on Hawaii Pacific
(8-1) tomorrow night at St. Andrews Priory Gym.
----
Chaminade topped Seattle Pacific, 15-6, 15-11, 14-16, 15-5, in a
women's small college volleyball match last night at McCabe Gym.
Hinano Warfield's 17 kills paced the Silverswords (10-3).

** 'Bow Football Program Lacking **
The *Honolulu Advertiser* conducted a survey of Western Athletic
Conference schools and found that the University of Hawaii
football program falls short in several categories. For
instance, out of a total athletic budget of $12.1 million, $2.8
million (23%) is allocated to the UH football program. In
comparison, $4.2 million of BYU's $14 million athletic budget is
doled out to its football team. Overall, ten of the 15 other WAC
schools have larger football budget than UH, almost all have year
round training tables for players (UH doesn't offer this), and
all WAC schools except Hawaii charter flights at least some of
the time. UH football coach Fred vonAppen has openly criticized
the cost-cutting measures by athletic director Hugh Yoshida.
Governor Ben Cayetano intervened, offering assistance in an
undisclosed form.
** Sumo Day 11 Report **
The beat rolled on for grand champion Takanohana as he won his
11th match without a loss at the Tokyo Fall Grand Sumo Tournament
last night. On track to win his fourth consecutive Basho, a feat
accomplished by only two others before, Takanohana defeated
Asahiyutaka (7-4) last night. Two rikishi from Hawaii remained
in contention with 9-2 records following victories last night.
Grand champion Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan) smothered
Akinoshima (6-5), and Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani)
defeated fellow ozeki Wakanohana (8-3). Konishiki (Nanakuli's
Salevaa Atisanoe) dropped to 2-9 after losing to Daishi (5-6).
** Kasana a Bulldog **
Deafness and lack of size didn't stop Patrick Kansana from trying
out for the Kaimuki High School football team. A 5-foot-4, 165-
pound senior, Kansana not only made the team, he sees
considerable playing time as a linebacker. Kansana, who lives on
Molokai but attends the Statewide Center for Students with
Hearing and Visual Impairments in Kapahulu, received permission
to play football for the Bulldogs. "We're glad to have him,"
said Kaimuki coach Fred Lee. "He's not afraid to hit." Lee and
his assistants have learned some sign language so they can
communicate with Kansana. Kansana, in turn, has given his
teammates some informal sign lessons. "He taught us how to make
letters with sign language," said linebacker Daniel La'a.

** Cayetano Arranges Pow-wow **
Governor Ben Cayetano played mediator yesterday, meeting with
University of Hawaii football coach Fred vonAppen and athletic
director Hugh Yoshida to discuss problems with the UH football
program. VonAppen has repeatedly complained about aspects of the
UH program, including a lack of chartered flights to mainland
road games, a year-round training table for players, and
"Division II" practice facilities and offices. Yoshida said he
would consider all of vonAppen's requests, but a tight budget has
the UH AD handcuffed. During the meeting, Cayetano reportedly
asked vonAppen to tone down his criticism. Afterward, vonAppen
told reporters, "If you haven't figured it out by now, nobody
gags yours truly." VonAppen and his Rainbows host Boise State on
Saturday night at Aloha Stadium.
** Sumo Day 10 Report **
Grand champion Takanohana improved his lead to two matches when

by Asahiyutaka (7-3). Also at 8-2 are a pair of ozeki:
Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani), who defeated Akinoshima
(6-4), and Takanohana's brother Wakanohana, who topped

Terrence Long and Scott Hunter (Stars), who combined for 81
stolen bases last winter.
** High School Sports News **
Interscholastic League of Honolulu president Tony Ramos said he
will explore options to end league football games earlier after
the final contest of a marathon ILH tripleheader finished after
midnight this past weekend. "I think (the length of games) is a
concern for everyone," said St. Louis coach Cal Lee. "It's
something every school has to address." Pac-Five coach Don
Botelho said long games can be attributed to two factors: a new
rule that stops the game clock on possession changes, and ILH
teams' preference for pass-oriented offenses.

St. Louis is ranked 25th in the latest USA Today Top 25 high

** VonAppen Speaks after 66-0 Thrashing **
If anything, University of Hawaii football coach Fred vonAppen
has a sense of humor. Following his team's 66-0 beating at the
hands of Wyoming, the UH grid boss cracked that the highlight of
Saturday's game was "that we warmed up pretty good." Turning
serious, vonAppen admitted, "We don't have a panacea. All we can
do is work hard and try to improve." Of his team's anemic
offensive performance, vonAppen said, "It's not the scheme. It
doesn't matter if we run the West Coast Offense, the East Coast
Offense, or the Shit Coast Offense, if we can't run the ball.
Our problem is we can't run a simple dive." The Rainbows, now 0-
3, will host NCAA Division I wannabe Boise State of the Big Sky
Conference this Saturday at Aloha Stadium. Once thought of as a
gimme for the 'Bows, the game is rated as a tossup.
** Sumo Day 9 Report **
Grand champions Takanohana and Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan)
continued their march toward a final day showdown as both won
matches on the ninth day of the 15-day Tokyo Fall Grand Sumo
Tournament last night. Takanohana improved to 9-0 after forcing
out Kotonowaka (1-8), and Akebono now stands at 8-1 following a
win over Kenko (1-8). A pair of ozeki (champions), Musashimaru
(Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani) and Wakanohana (brother of
Takanohana), also won yesterday and are 7-2. Maegashira 4
Konishiki (Nanakuli's Salevaa Atisanoe) is on the verge of
demotion after losing yesterday. He is 2-7 and needs to win his
six remaining bouts to avoid dropping in rank.
** Cuba Pounds U.S. **
Cuba dominated Team USA, 15-10, 15-13, 15-4, in the final match
of the 1996 Bank of Hawaii Cup women's volleyball tournament last
night before a crowd of 5,011 at the Special Events Arena. The
victory gave the Cubans (3-0) the tourney title, the $50,000
first prize, and a spot in the World Grand Prix final at Shanghai
later this month. Despite the loss, the U.S. women (1-2)
finished second, earning $35,000. The match also marked the end
of former UH Wahine star Tee Williams' stint with the U.S. squad.
She will play professionally in Italy. "The fans were great
here," said Williams. "I'll miss them."

** 600th Triumph for Shoji **
University of Hawaii women's volleyball coach Dave Shoji won his
600th career match as his top-ranked UH Wahine topped California,
15-11, 15-7, 15-7, at the Special Events Arena last night. A
crowd of 6,601 watched Hawaii, sparked by All Americans Robyn Ah
Mow and Angelica Ljungquist, battle back from a 10-5 deficit to
take game one. The Wahine (10-0) then de-clawed the Bears (2-3)
in games two and three to win the match easily. By winning his
600th match, Shoji became the 10th coach in NCAA Division I to
reach that milestone. "I don't like to be singled out," said
Shoji. "All the players share in the wins, and it's gratifying
to know that so many great players have contributed to it."
** Football 'Bows Ripped **
Wyoming gave Hawaii a good ol' fashioned whipping, romping over
the Rainbows, 66-0, in a Western Athletic Conference football
game yesterday afternoon at Laramie, Wyoming. "We got our ass
kicked," said Hawaii wideout Dillan Marcus. "They could have
scored 100," moaned UH defensive coordinator Don Lindsey. The
Cowboys amassed 509 yards in total offense to Hawaii's 154.
Cowboy quarterback Josh Wallwork, who has family in Hawaii and
wanted to be a Rainbow, completed 19 of 34 passes for 288 yards
and two touchdowns. He also scored on a 14 yard quarterback draw
in the second quarter. Wyoming improved to 3-0 while the
Rainbows dropped to 0-3.
** Bankoh Cup Continues **
Japan upset Team USA, and Cuba defeated the Netherlands in second
round matches of the Bank of Hawaii Cup women's volleyball
tournament yesterday afternoon at the Special Events Arena. Tara
Cross-Battle had 22 kills and former UH Wahine Teee Williams
added 20 in the 15-9, 5-15, 10-15, 16-14, 15-8 USA defeat. "It's
a big loss because a win here could have solidified (a spot in
the World Cup Grand Prix finals at Shanghai)." The Bankoh Cup
concludes today with the US squad (1-1) taking on Cuba (2-0) and
Japan (1-1) meeting the Netherlands (0-2).
** Sumo Day 8 Results **

Rowan) trails by a match at 7-1 after shoving out Takatoriki
(4-4). Ozeki (champion) Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani)
dropped to 6-2 after losing to his nemesis Kaio (5-3) for the
seventh straight tournament. A third rikishi from Hawaii,

By defeating Kotoinazuma, yokozuna (grand champion) Takanohana
remained unbeaten after six days of competition in the Tokyo Fall
Grand Sumo Tournament. Four rikishi are a match back at 5-1,
including grand champion Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan), who

** Wahine Tackle Bears Tonight **
University of Hawaii coach Dave Shoji seeks his 599th career win

unranked California (2-1) at the Special Events Arena. Walk-on
Aven Lee, a true freshman from Kamehameha, will start at outside
hitter for the Wahine in place of injured (ankle) Joselyn Robins.
Another freshman, Heidi Illustre, a 5-10 outside hitter from
Carson, Calif., is also expected to see extensive playing time in
the back row since another UH starter, defensive specialist
Nalani Yamashita, is hobbled by shin splints.
** US Wins **
Tara Cross-Battle pounded 24 kills and former UH Wahine All-
American Teee Williams slapped down 12 more to lead Team USA to a
13-15, 15-0, 15-12, 15-8, victory over the Netherlands in a Bank

coach Fred vonAppen has ordered his players to arise at dawn

** UH Requests BYU Probe **
Concerned about potential wrongdoing, the University of Hawaii
athletic department has asked the Western Athletic Conference to
investigate the transfer of football player Hauoli Wong from
Hawaii to Brigham Young University. Wong, a 6-6, 305-pound
offensive lineman, quit the UH football team two days into
preseason camp and soon thereafter showed up on the BYU campus.
"It happened awfully quickly," said UH coach Fred vonAppen. "If
(the transfer) is all on the up and up, fine. If it isn't, we're
annoyed." Two other WAC schools, New Mexico and Utah, registered
complaints about the transfer to the conference office. Coaches
from both schools wanted to talk to Wong but held back because he
was not granted a release from UH.

and move on to Italy to play on the professional indoor circuit.
----
Over on Kauai, some of the best women's beach volleyball players

Fontana Harris and Linda Hanley are three players with island
ties: Karrie Trieschmann Poppinga (UH), Danalee Bragado
(Punahou), and Janice Harrer (former Chaminade coach). The
tournament begins tomorrow and runs through Sunday.
** Sumo Day 5 Report **
After five days of competition, grand champion Takanohana stands
alone atop the Tokyo Fall Grand Sumo Tournament rankings with a
5-0 mark. The powerful yokozuna shoved out No. 3 maegashira
Kotobeppu (0-5). Four rikishi are 4-1, including grand champion
Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan), who defeated Kotoinazuma (2-3),
and Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani), who lost to
Kotonishiki (4-1). Another wrestler from Hawaii, Konishiki
(Nanakuli's Salevaa Atisanoe), won his first match of the
tournament by forcing out Minatofuji.
** Ross Completes Rookie Stint **
Former UH baseball player Jason Ross visited the Islands last
week after finishing his rookie season of professional baseball
for Danville (Va.) in the Appalachian League. Ross, a 13th round
pick of Atlanta in the free agent draft last June, ended the
season with a .268 batting average. He went 21 for 59 in the
last 17 games of the season to break out of an early-season
slump. "It's a lot different from playing college baseball,"
said Ross. "In the pros, you play every day. You travel and
play on the same day. You have no days off."

Shore to do battle with Kahuku tomorrow night. First-year Kailua
coach Darren Johnson is a former Kahuku quarterback and assistant
coach. Also tomorrow, the private schools begin regular season
play in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu at Aloha Stadium.

** Wong to BYU **
Offensive tackle Hauoli Wong, who quit the University of Hawaii
football team in training camp in August, has to transferred to
Brigham Young University and is practicing with the Cougars.
Wong, a 6-6, 305-pounder from Kailua High School, started all 12
games for the Rainbows as a freshman in 1995. Apparently, he
became disenchanted with the UH program when new coach Fred
vonAppen came aboard and asked for his release two days into
preseason drills. VonAppen refused to grant one. "The basic
rule of thumb is you don't grant a release to somebody
transferring within the same conference," he said. BYU offensive
coordinator Norm Chow confirmed that Wong, who must pay his own
way this season without the release from UH, has been practicing
with the Cougars' scout team.
** UH's Shoji Closing in on 600 **
If all goes well, University of Hawaii women's volleyball coach
Dave Shoji will win his 599th and 600th matches this weekend when
the Wahine host California at the Special Events Arena. Shoji,
who began coaching the Wahine in 1975 while still a grad student
at UH, is now in his 22nd season at the helm of the Hawaii
program, amassing a 598-121 win-loss record and four NCAA titles.
"When I first started, there was no way that I would have
imagined still being here 22 years later," said Shoji, who had
aspirations of being a high school teacher and coach. Said
former UH women's athletic director Donnis Thompson, who hired
Shoji: "I could see he knew the game, had the right temperament,
and worked hard. Looking back, it was like Dave fell to us from
heaven."
** The ILH Beat Goes on--Saints Favored Again **
Lose all-state quarterback Darnell Arceneaux and several other
starters to graduation. Rebuilding time for the St. Louis High
School football team, right? Not hardly. The Crusaders appear
mightier than ever and are heavy favorites to win their 11th
straight Interscholastic League of Honolulu and Oahu Prep Bowl
titles this season. St. Louis coach Cal Lee has found a new
quarterback to replace Arceneaux in junior Jason Gesser, who
looked impressive in preseason victories over Waianae and
Baldwin. Add to the mix speedy receiver Randyn Akiona, and
returning all-staters Dominic Raiola (offensive guard), Jacob
Yoro (linebacker) and Wes Tufaga (safety), and the Saints should
go marching to yet another title. The ILH regular season
commences on Friday at Aloha Stadium with the following matchups:

** Sumo Day 14 Report **
With a 4-0 records, grand champion Takanohana, champion
Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani) and junior champion
Musoyama share the lead of Tokyo Fall Grand Sumo Tournament.
Takanohana threw down Kenko (1-3), Musashimaru forced out
Kotobeppu (0-4), and Musoyama threw down Konishiki ([0-4]
Nanakuli's Salevaa Atisanoe. Grand champion Akebono (Waimanalo's
Chad Rowan) improved to 3-1 by defeating Kotonowaka (0-4).
** Robins Rockin' for Silverswords **
Former Fab-50 high school All-American Danielle Robins has
resurfaced on Chaminade women's volleyball team and is big reason
the Silverswords are off to a 7-2 start this season. Several
years ago, Robins was the state's top female player as a senior
at University High. Scholarship offers arrived by the barrel-
full. However, the interest of college coaches waned when Robins
injured her knee in a state tournament match. Robins, whose
brothers (Duke--UH and Fred--UCLA) and sister (Mary--UH) played
or are still playing at the college level, lost confidence in her
ability following the injury and just worked for several years
after high school. Enter Chaminade coach Glennie Adams into the
picture. "I knew she was a good volleyball player and that she
would be an asset to our program," said Adams. "She's not the
dominating force she was in high school, but her talent is
evident." Robins leads the Silverswords in kills, hitting
percentage, aces, and digs.

** Wahine Improve to 8-0 **
Top-ranked Hawaii swept Santa Clara, 15-4, 15-3, 19-17, to
capture the title of the Aston Imua Wahine Challenge tournament
before a crowd of 5,453 last night at the Special Events Arena.
With two injured starters and the outcome of the match never in
doubt, UH coach Dave Shoji started two freshmen, Heidi Illustre
and Aven Lee, and gave extensive playing time to two others,
Jennifer Roberts and Kapu Elkington. "There were some pretty
good performances out there," said Shoji. Angelica Ljungquist,
Robyn Ah Mow, and Therese Crawford were named to the all-
tournament team. The Wahine will host California on Friday and
Saturday at the Special Events Arena.
** Two of Three Hawaii Rikishi Fall **
Ozeki (champion) Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani) was the
only Hawaii rikishi to win a match last night at the Fall Grand
Sumo Tournament in Tokyo. He improved to 2-0 by defeating
Tamakasuga (1-1). In other matches, grand champion Akebono
(Waimanalo's Chad Rowan) fell to 1-1 after being upset by
Musoyama (2-0), and maegashira 4 Konishiki (Nanakuli's Salevaa
Atisanoe) remained winless after losing to Takatoriki (1-1).
** Wyoming Up Next for 0-2 'Bows **
The rugged road won't get any easier to traverse for the winless
(0-2) University of Hawaii football team, when the Rainbows visit
Wyoming for Western Athletic Conference road game this weekend at
mile-high Laramie, Wyoming. UH coach Fred vonAppen acknowledged
that his team needs to improve in several areas, especially its
woeful running attack, which averaged less than 1.5 yards an
attempt. "What it looked like to me was like the way it looked
like in training camp where we wondered, 'Can we make a first
down?'" said vonAppen. Freshman Josh Skinner will probably start
at quarterback this week in place of injured (separated shoulder)
first-teamer Glenn Freitas.

** Bows Fall to 0-2 **
Shrugging off its underdog status and using an offense UH had
abandoned, Ohio University defeated the University of Hawaii, 21-
10, in front of 27,642 rain-dampened football fans last night at
Aloha Stadium. OU, 0-11 and ranked last among NCAA Division I
schools two years ago, improved to 2-0 for 1996. Hawaii, in one
of the handful of games it was expected to win this season, fell
to 0-2. The Bobcats, using the spread option attack Hawaii had
scrapped, beat the Rainbows last night by pounding out 263 yards
on the ground. Hawaii's touted West Coast offense managed just
209 net yards. True freshman Josh Skinner, summoned to replace
an injured Glenn Freitas in the second quarter, played reasonably
well, completing 14 of 33 pass attempts for 147 yards. Skinner's
36-yard strike to Dillan Micus in the third quarter cut a 14-0
deficit in half. The Rainbows, despite numerous opportunities,
could only manage a field goal the rest of the way. Hawaii takes
to road for the first time this season for a game this Saturday
against Wyoming in Laramie.
** Fall Sumo Tourney Opens **
Grand champion Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan) defeated
Kotobeppu, and ozeki Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani)
defeated fellow local boy Konishiki (Nanakuli's Salevaa Atisanoe)
on the opening night of the Fall Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo.
Yokozuna Takanohana, seeking a record-tying fifth consecutive
tournament title, was also victorious last night.
** Former Local Prepsters Shine **
Three former local prep football players made important
contributions to their college teams yesterday. Former St. Louis
High School defensive tackle Viliami Maumau, now a starter for
No. 5 Colorado, batted down a pass, caught it, and raced 33 yards
for a touchdown in the Buffaloes' 48-34 win over in-state rival
Colorado State. In Utah's 17-10 win over Stanford, another
former Crusader, Chris Fuamatu-Maafala, rushed for 64 yards on 21
carries and scored on 3-yard run. Former Iolani quarterback
Brian Ah Yat threw for 177 yards and two touchdowns in Montana's
35-14 upset over Oregon State.

** Wahine Need Four to Top Sac State **
The top-ranked University of Hawaii Wahine cruised early,
struggled, then regained their early form to defeat Cal State-
Sacramento, 15-9, 15-2, 13-15, 15-10, in an Aston's Imua
Challenge volleyball tournament match last night at the Special
Events Arena. With Therese Crawford (9 kills), Angelica
Ljungquist (10 kills), and Robyn Ah Mow setting the tempo, Hawaii
won games one and two with ease. Hawaii coach Dave Shoji cleared
his bench, and Sac State battled back from an 8-3 deficit to win
game three, 15-13. A crowd of 6,410 watched the Wahine mount a
rally of their own in game four, overcoming an initial 5-0 Hornet
blitz. "It was scary," said Shoji. "But it woke us up a little
bit. Our players know now that they can't relax against anyone."
The Wahine (7-0) will take on Santa Clara (2-2) in the tournament
finale tomorrow night.
** Bows Hope to Bop Bobcats **
The University of Hawaii football team will host Ohio University
in a college football game tonight at Aloha Stadium. The
Rainbows are coming off a heartbreaking 24-21 last-second loss to
Boston College last weekend. The Bobcats, using the spread

** Wahine Win Tourney Opener **
A Special Events Arena crowd of 5,254 watched the top-ranked
University of Hawaii Wahine volleyball team defeat unranked Rhode
Island, 15-5, 15-4, 15-7, in a first round match of the Aston
Imua Wahine Classic last night. All-America middle blocker
Angelica Ljungquist slapped down 13 kills to spark the Wahine
(6-0). Said Rhode Island coach Bob Schneck: "I don't think
there's gonna be too many teams that are gonna beat this (UH)
team this season. Their bench is a top twenty team as well."
Hawaii will take on Cal State-Sacramento (3-1) tonight. Wahine
outside hitter Joselyn Robins suffered an ankle injury in last
night's match and is listed as doubtful for the two remaining
tournament matches this weekend.
** Stanford QB to Transfer **
Stanford quarterback Tim Carey confirmed that he will transfer to
the University of Hawaii to play his senior season. A former
high school All-American, the 6-foot-4, 200-pound Carey obtained
his release from Stanford after discovering he was beaten out by
another player for the Cardinals' starting signal caller job. He
is expected to begin attending classes at Manoa next week and
must redshirt this season. Hawaii coach Fred vonAppen remained
non-committal about Carey, saying "We'll certainly welcome him if
he wants to come. But we're honestly fine with or without him."
While assistants at Stanford, vonAppen and Guy Benjamin, the
current UH offensive coordinator, helped to recruit Carey.
----
In other UH football news, team doctors are set to give Daniel
Ho-Ching a release to play. Ho-Ching, a quarterback turned
defensive back, turned running back, sat out last season when
doctors discovered a cancerous tumor in his nostril. After six
chemotherapy treatments, the most recent one in February, he is
just about ready to return to the team. "The doctor said
everything is okay," said Ho-Ching. "I'm ready to get back into
shape." The Rainbows will host Ohio University tomorrow night at
Aloha Stadium.
** Mountain Bikers Here **
The Grundig/MCI Mountain Bike World Cup is set to run today

Sunday, the action shifts to Kualoa Ranch on the windward side
where riders will traverse an 8-mile cross-country course along
the foot of the Koolaus. The races are the final ones on this
year's World Cup tour.

** Ellis Returns with Broncos **
Kamehameha ('93) graduate Auli'i Ellis is one of the top players
on the Santa Clara women's volleyball team which will join the
University of Hawaii, Rhode Island, and Cal State-Sacramento in
the Aston Imua Wahine Challenge tournament that begins tonight at
the Special Events Arena. The 5-foot-8 Ellis, who out of high
school opted to accept a full scholarship to Santa Clara instead
of walking on at UH, leads the Broncos in kills (4.6) and digs
(4.0) per game. "Plain and simple hard work has made her the
player that she is," said Santa Clara coach Annie Feller, who
served as a graduate assistant under UH coach Dave Shoji in
1987-88. In opening round matches tonight, Santa Clara (1-1)
will take on CS-Sacramento (2-1) and Hawaii (5-0) will meet Rhode
Island (1-1).
** Konishiki Still Going **
The Tokyo Fall Grand Sumo Tournament begins on Saturday and
Hawaii's Salevaa Atisanoe, known in sumo circles as Konishiki,
will be one of the competing rikishi. The Nanakuli native and
former ozeki (champion) staved off demotion from the sport's
highest division (and probable retirement) by posting winning
records in the last two tournaments. He currently holds the rank
of maegashira 4. The 33-year-old, 6-foot-1, 625-pounder has a
career record of 604-408.
** UH Football News **
Stanford quarterback Tim Carey has expressed interest in
transferring to the University of Hawaii. One of the nation's
top signal callers as a high school senior, Carey, a 6-4, 200-
pound junior, has had a lackluster career at Stanford and was
beaten out for the Cardinals' starting QB job this season. "We'd
love to have him if he wants to come," said UH coach Fred
vonAppen. Carey would have to redshirt a year if he transfers
and would have one season of eligibility remaining.
** High School Football News **
St. Louis, the state's top-ranked high school football team,
heads to the Valley Isle this weekend to take on Baldwin in a
pre-season game. This season, the Crusaders will be attempting
to win their unprecedented 11th straight ILH and Oahu Prep
championships. "We know we'll never get to play them in the
postseason (because no state tournament in football exists), so
the kids are looking forward to this," said Baldwin coach Joe
Balangitao, whose team has fared well against top-flight Oahu
teams in preseason battles the past few years.

** 'Bow Defensive Secondary Improved **
After finishing 74th of 106 Division I teams in passing yardage
allowed, the University of Hawaii defensive unit, its secondary
in particular, wasn't expected to emulate the Great Wall of
China. After Saturday's performance against Boston College,
where the UH D limited the Eagles to 14 of 36 passing, it's
possible that the defensive backfield is much improved.
Cornerback Al Hunter, a St. Louis High grad, and converted
receiver Eddie Klaneski from Damien High played impressively.
The Rainbows host Ohio University this Saturday at Aloha Stadium.
** Wahine to Host Another Tourney **
With two tournament titles already under their belt this season,

won a season-opening tournament in Illinois two weeks ago and the
Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic this past weekend.

Pacific Division player of the week for her performance this past
weekend. In three tournament matches, she had 118 assists, 28

** Waianae, Kahuku Favored in OIA **
Perennial high school powerhouses Waianae and Kahuku are expected
to do battle for OIA football supremacy this season. Despite
pre-season losses to St. Louis and Kamehameha, the Seariders and
second year coach Leo Taaca will be in thick of the championship
chase. Waianae's top players include running back Josh Meyer and
6-2, 260-pound defensive lineman White Sosene. Rookie coach
Siuaki Livai replaces Doug Semones, now an assistant for the
University of Hawaii, at the Red Raider helm. Offensive lineman
Matt Parkhurst (6-2, 276-pounds) and linebacker Alvin Manutai
(6-1, 237-pounds) lead Kahuku. Campbell, with one of the
league's top defensive units, is also expected to make a title
push. The OIA divisional breakdowns are as follows (1995 record
in parentheses):
==OIA Red== ==OIA White==
Campbell (6-3-1) Aiea (7-2-1)
Farrington (3-6) Castle (5-4)
Kahuku (8-2-2) Kalaheo (5-6)

** Wahine Bop Bruins **
With relative ease, the top-ranked University of Hawaii Wahine
volleyball team defeated No. 12 UCLA, 15-5, 15-2, 15-9, in the
final match of the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic last night at
the Special Events Arena. A crowd of 7,285 watched Hawaii finish
3-0 in the tourney and improve to 5-0 overall. UCLA dropped to
1-2. "To beat UCLA that easily is very gratifying," said UH
coach Dave Shoji. "It's been such a great rivalry over the
years." Hawaii had played the Bruins in 51 previous matches,
winning 26, and never had held them to single digit point totals
for three games. Tourney MVP Robyn Ah Mow ran the Wahine offense
brilliantly, dishing out 44 assists. Angelica Ljungquist and
Joselyn Robins joined her on the all-tournament team.
** Sewak Returns with OU **
Former UH assistant coach Mike Sewak, now the offensive
coordinator for Ohio University, will bring the Bobcats and the
spread option attack to town this week to do battle with
University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors on Saturday night at Aloha
Stadium. Sewak was an assistant to Bob Wagner from 1987-1994,
coaching the offensive line. He left UH for OU a year after the
Rainbows' 1993 Western Athletic Conference and Holiday Bowl
championship season. At OU, he has installed the same double-
slot option offense run by the Rainbows in the Wagner era. "The
fans will get to boo it all over again," joked Sewak.
** Roughwater Victories for Aussies **
Australian Olympians Malcolm Allen and Stacey Gartrell won the
respective men's and women's titles at yesterday's 2.4-mile
Waikiki Roughwater Swim from Sans Souci Beach to the Hilton
Hawaiian Village. Allen, a 400-meter freestyle semifinalist at
Atlanta, won first-to-finish honors yesterday with a time of 51
minutes, 11 seconds. Countryman Kurt Eldredge (51:58) and
Californian Alex Kostich (51:59) finished second and third.
Gartrell, who admitted to being "in the water only three or four
times since the Olympics" (she competed in the 800-meter
freestyle), showed no signs of a lack of training to win the
women's competition with a time of 56:58. Hawaii's Jodi Jackson
finished 17 seconds back.
** Saints Top Grid Rankings **

** Wahine Lash Louisville **
A Special Events Arena crowd of 7,659 watched the top-ranked
University of Hawaii Wahine volleyball team sweep No. 25
Louisville in three games, 16-14, 15-2, 15-4, in a Hawaiian
Airlines Wahine Classic match last night. Hawaii improved to 2-0
in the tournament and 4-0 overall. The Cardinals fell to 1-1.
With 11 kills, Therese Crawford led a balanced Wahine attack.
Angelica Ljungquist contributed nine more, and Chastity Nobriga
and Joselyn Robins added 8 apiece. Ljungquist also had 11 blocks.
"I thought we played about as good as we can play at this point
of the year," said UH coach Dave Shoji, who will hope for a
repeat performance tonight when the Wahine take on No. 6 UCLA (1-
1), a 15-8, 15-5, 7-15, 18-16 victor over unranked Michigan last
night.
** VonAppen: I'm proud of the team
Despite losing his first game as a college head coach, Hawaii's
Fred vonAppen said good things arose from the Rainbows' 24-21
last second loss to Boston College on Saturday. "We know our
guys can respond," said vonAppen. "We played without fear. We
can grow from this." VonAppen cited problems with his team's
inexperience and lack of a consistent pass rush and running game.
"We have the willingness to go out and play to the standard we
have set," he said. "We have to continue to do that. When you
back up on the standard, you run the risk of magnifying your
shortcomings. And we have a lot of shortcomings." The Rainbows
will try for their first win of the vonAppen era this Saturday
when they host Ohio University.

** Bows Lose Heartbreaker **
John Matich kicked a 2-yard field goal as time expired to give
Boston College a 24-21 come-from-behind victory over a hard-
fighting University of Hawaii football team yesterday afternoon
at Aloha Stadium. A crowd of 34,838 was on hand for the head
coaching debut of Hawaii's Fred vonAppen. After a 27-yard Matich
field goal in the first quarter opened the scoring, Hawaii
quarterback Glenn Freitas found Gary Elison between two defenders
from eight yards out to give the Rainbows a lead they would not
relinquish till Matich's game-winning boot. Freitas' one-yard
sneak gave UH a 21-13 cushion with 13:26 remaining but the Eagles
turned to backup signal-caller Matt Hasselback for some fourth
quarter heroics. With 1:36 left, Hasselback culminated a
53-yard, 13-play drive with a 3-yard TD toss to Rob Tardio. He
then found Dennis Harding for the two-point conversion to knot
the score at 21-all. The Rainbow offense stalled on the ensuing
possession, setting up Matich's final boot. "Some people may
call this a moral victory, but there's no such thing," said a
stoic vonAppen after the game. "We have to move on and grow from
this."
** Wahine Top Worrisome Wolverines **
Rallying from a slow start, the University of Hawaii Wahine
volleyball team defeated Michigan 15-11, 15-10, 15-9, in a first-
round game of the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic in front of a
Special Events Arena crowd of 7,659 on Friday night. Michigan
jumped out to 5-0 advantage in the opening game and led 11-7
before the Wahine finally found themselves. Joselyn Robins
played brilliantly, hammering 22 kills on the night. Angelica
Ljungquist chipped in with 12 kills. Tonight, top-ranked Hawaii
(3-0) will take on No. 25 Louisville (1-0), an upset winner over
No. 6 UCLA on Friday night.

** VonAppen Ready for Opener **
Saying that he's anxious to get underway, Fred vonAppen will make
his head coaching debut tomorrow afternoon (3 p.m. HST) at Aloha
Stadium when his University of Hawaii football team takes on
Boston College. "I'm too old to be nervous," said vonAppen, 54.
"I'll admit I'm anxious. I think there's a difference.
'Nervous' has a desperate connotation. 'Anxious' has a hopeful
one. I'm curious to see how things are going to play out." A
crowd of about 40,000 is expected for the game, which will mark
the Rainbow debut of the heralded West Coast offense. "I would
say it's a little bit like the anticipation for legal drinking,
graduation, and sex," he said. "It's not quite what you think
it's going to be."

capable replacement for departed all-state signal caller Darnell
Arceneaux, torched the Searider secondary for 334 yards and three
touchdowns. The Crusaders led 21-7 after two quarters of play
and scored twice in the second half, the highlight being Randyn
Akiona's 79-yard sprint to paydirt on a flanker screen. Led by
all-state linebacker Jacob Yoro, the St. Louis defense also
played well, holding in check Waianae's vaunted ground attack.

** Starting Nod to Nobriga **
After four years as an understudy, fifth-year senior Chastity
Nobriga has moved into the spotlight as a starter for the top-
ranked University of Hawaii Wahine volleyball team. Nobriga, one
of the top 50 prospects in the nation coming out of Pearl City
High School in 1992, fills the spot at opposite occupied by Jenny
Wilton last season. The other five starters for the Wahine
returned. "She is extremely strong," said UH coach Dave Shoji.
"Her hands will not get blown back (while blocking). When she
makes contact with the ball, it's either going straight down or
it's going to be deflected. It's rarely going to go between her
and the net." Hawaii (2-0) hosts No. 6 UCLA (0-0), No. 25
Louisville (0-0), and unranked Michigan (0-0) in the Hawaiian
Airline Wahine Classic this weekend at the Special Events Arena.
** Johnson Inks Deal **
Former University of Hawaii pitcher Mark Johnson has come to
terms with the Houston Astros. The 19th player selected in the
Amateur Draft in June, Johnson will sign a contract today that
will include a bonus worth $775,000. Other terms of the contract
were not disclosed. Said Johnson: "I'm very excited. It's a
great step in my career and I'm excited about being an Astro and
going out and showing what I can do in pro baseball." Earlier
this week when contract negotiations lagged, Johnson had
expressed interest in returning to Hawaii to play his senior
season with the Rainbows.

** Clearance for Green Probable **
Thanks to the lobbying efforts of the UH athletic department and
the Western Athletic Conference, University of Hawaii football
player Ryan Green will probably be cleared to play this season.
Last week, Green, a transfer from the University of Pacific, was
ruled academically ineligible because he had not earned enough
credits in his major. A document showing that Green withdrew
from Pacific last semester because of illness are being forwarded
to the NCAA. This document could help Green, a possible starter
at tight end for the Rainbows, regain his eligibility as early as
today. Hawaii faces Boston College on Saturday afternoon at
Aloha Stadium in the season opener for both teams.
** Aloha to Blue **
Standout beachboy, waterman and canoe paddler Baldwin Kaleipokii
"Blue" Makua died of prostrate cancer last Friday. He was 72. A
paddler for canoe teams such as Outrigger, Hui Nalu, and Waikiki
Surf Club, Makua was a member of four Molokai-to-Oahu winning
crews. Along with the Duke Kahanamoku, Makua, in his heyday, was
considered the best paddler in Hawaii. A memorial service and
the scattering of ashes will take place on Sept. 14 on the beach
fronting Duke's restaurant in Waikiki. Makua is survived by his
wife, Barbara, three sons, and three grandchildren.
** Mac Back **
The University of Hawaii baseball team received a boost when
pitcher Andrew McNally returned to the Islands for his senior
season. The hard throwing southpaw, the Western Athletic
Conference freshman of the year in 1993, sat out last season to
play on the Australian national team. UH baseball coach Les
Murakami also received word that ace pitcher Mark Johnson is
considering returning to Hawaii for his senior season. Johnson,
a first round draft choice of the Houston Astros in May,
apparently is embroiled in a contract stalemate with the Astros
and has expressed an interest in playing his final year with UH
instead of turning pro. Classes at UH began yesterday.

** Freitas Set to Start **
University of Hawaii football coach Fred vonAppen hasn't made it
official yet, but it's likely he will name Glenn Freitas as the
starting quarterback for the Rainbows' season opening game
against Boston College this Saturday at Aloha Stadium. Freitas,
a senior and a former all-state selection for Waianae High,
wasn't expected to make much noise in this season's din for the
UH signal-calling slot. After all, as an option quarterback
recruited for Bob Wagner's option offense, Freitas couldn't
possibly be a serious candidate to be the triggerman in
vonAppen's high tech West Coast passing offense. Or could he? "My
family didn't raise me to be a quitter," said Freitas, who has
occupied the No. 1 QB spot for the entire preseason camp.
----
In a related story, tight end Ryan Green still has hopes that his
eligibility will be restored. Green, who transferred to UH this
after his former school, University of Pacific, dropped its
football program, is currently unable to play because of a Big
West Conference ruling on his academic standing. University of
Hawaii and Western Athletic Conference officials are spearheading
a bid to clear up the matter and restore Green's eligibility.
Green, a pro prospect, was scheduled to start at tight end for
the Rainbows.
** Victorious Wahine Home **
A small throng turned out the Honolulu International Airport to
welcome home the University of Hawaii Wahine volleyball team
after its season-opening road trip to Normal, Illinois for the
NACWAA Volleyball Tournament. The Wahine captured the tourney
title, defeating No. 11 Florida on Friday, and No. 5 Nebraska on
Saturday. Said UH coach Dave Shoji: "I was disappointed in the
way we played against Florida. But after I reflected on it one
day I thought: One, Florida is pretty good; and two, it was our
first game and I guess I expected too much." The Wahine, despite
still being "a bit ragged," according to Shoji, played much
better in sweeping Nebraska in the championship match.

** Wahine Sweep Nebraska **
Top-ranked Hawaii defeated No. 5 Nebraska, 15-12, 16-14, 15-9
last night at Normal, Illinois, to win the championship of the
NACWAA Women's Volleyball Classic. Tournament MVP Angelica
Ljungquist hammered 12 kills to lead the Wahine (2-0). Hawaii
coach Dave Shoji described the victory as "real ragged" but he
was pleased nonetheless. "I think we have room to grow," he
said. The Cornhuskers fought hard despite losing five starters
from their 1995 national championship team. Former University
High star Fiona Nepo is Nebraska's starting setter.
** Former Hawaii Prepsters Spark BYU **
The ones that got away played big roles in Brigham Young's 41-37
early-season football triumph over Texas A&M yesterday at Provo,
Utah. Former Hawaii prep stars Kaipo McGuire (St. Louis), Itula
Mili and Mark Atuaia (Kahuku) and K.O. Kealaluhi (Maui High)
figured prominently in the Cougar offensive attack. McGuire
caught two TD tosses, Mili and Atuaia combined for 96 receiving
yards, and Kealaluhi had 151 yards in receptions and snagged the
game-winning 46-yard TD toss from Steve Sarkisian with a minute
left to play.
** VonAppen Requests Switch **
Hoping to gain any advantage he can, University of Hawaii
football coach Fred vonAppen has requested that the Rainbows
occupy the makai sideline at Aloha Stadium for their season-

bench has traditionally been on the mauka side, but vonAppen,
noting that the sun will shine on the mauka bench area for the
entire duration of the 3 p.m to 6 p.m game next week, requested
the switch. UH athletic director Hugh Yoshida said the request
will be granted but as a one-shot deal. WAC rules require that
the home team occupy the same side as the student section.
