After seeing the plight of the pair, Fred vonAppen and his wife Thea entered the water. Both were nearly sucked under and needed the assistance of Smith and others on the scene to escape. Meanwhile, Smith could not extricate himself from the force of a violent whirlpool and drowned. Firefighters arriving on the scene later found Smith's body wedged between rocks at the bottom of the 20- to 30-foot deep pool. Addressing the press yesterday, Fred vonAppen, fighting back tears, said Smith acted heroically: "He wasn't going to leave the water until he knew we were all out of harm's way. It's sad beyond words. I've never experienced anything more painful than this." ** High School Girls' Basketball ** ==Honolulu Advertiser Top 10 Poll== Teams are ranked by a panel of coaches and sportswriters.
