Library News
The library is the place to be this summer. Come in from the hot sun, cool off, and read!
The children's summer reading program is starting off with Turtles! On June 13, at 10 am, the Super Sea Turtles program, presented by the Sea Life Park staff will be held at the Waimanalo Library. Those attending will learn about these cousins of the dinosaurs with pictures, specimens, and other surprises. Books from the library collection will be on display for the children to borrow.
The summer reading program, with the theme "Dive Into Books," will run from June 13 through July 29. Children may register at the library and receive a reading log. Each week, for five books that are read and logged, the child will receive an incentive. A child may receive only one incentive per week. Incentives will be given as supplies last and have been donated by McDonalds, Frito-Lay, KITV, GECC Financial, and the public library system. This program is open to all children, pre-school to 6th grade.
In addition to the program described above, through the grant writing efforts of Pat Wiencdke of the Kaneohe Library, GECC Financial awarded $25,000 to the library system for the ELFUN Early Years Initiative. GECC is donating banners, several posters, and 2 weeks' incentives for all libraries. In addition, 12 libraries, including Waimanalo Library, will be adopted for a model read-aloud program. GECC Associates will be volunteering as community facilitators at our Waimanalo Library to assist the staff in conducting the summer reading program.
A GECC/Sea Life Park "Dive Into Books" celebration finale will be held on August 12. Sea Life Park will be offering discount price for admission for all summer reading participants. For more details, call the library at 259-7620.
The Young Adults, teens entering 7th through 12th grades, will also have a reading program, with the theme "Be Cool: Read!" The minimum requirement for young adults is to read and log one young adult or adult book. YAs will also receive incentives weekly as they log in their books. The incentives will be different, definitely original--and cool!
All children and youth are encouraged to participate. The library is the place to be this summer for children and teens. Adults, we have not forgotten you! You will find new books and videos as you come in this summer. Come in from the hot sun, cool off, and read!
The hours for the summer will remain the same: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 9 am to 5 pm. Wednesday, 12 noon to 8 pm. The library will be closed on Monday, June 12, for Kamehameha Day.

The Library Store at the Hawaii State Library, downtown on King Street, opened on May 20. Corporate sponsor is American Savings Bank. The Hawaii Library Foundation has recruited volunteers to man the store which will sell souvenir items, new Hawaiian books and unique items. As interest, inventory, and profits grow, other stores may open in other libraries. All this is to help generate funds for the libraries. When in town, drop in and visit the store. And, if you would like to volunteer there, call the Library Foundation at 586-3704. n
