Belated happy b'day to "Mr. Waikiki" Roy Kelley--father of the Outrigger Hotel chain...It's been many years since I treked to Haunama Bay. Did so recently. Didn't hear one complaint from tourists paying the $5 entry fee. Just delightful... Honolulu Legends in Concert boss Marvin Silverman and wife Elia back from a whirlwind weekend at Lake Tahoe--guests of Paul Revere where his Raiders were headling at Harrah's. Revere lives here--having a major financial stake in the Legends show. His better half Sydney is the show's Marilyn Monroe... Unexpected cinema delight: Babe. It's for everybody... Some surprising local political names rumored advising South Pacific islanders interested in the gaming industry... Ed Brown, who handled Don Ho's business interests during the entertainer's halcyon days, in for a pow-pow with his client... Letcha in on a little scoop about Councilmember John Henry Felix. Likes to dig up his plants and move `em around his property. Keeps him from getting bored with the landscape...Well done: To those who worked hard transforming l8th Ave. into a class street... Some time ago I mentioned the medical saga of Mrs. Duke Kawasaki. Suffered for years with a rare and painful neuralgia. Husband Duke met with doctors the world over seeking help. No luck--until he accidentally found Dr. Ishida right here in Honolulu. He performed the surgical cure. Another person with the same ailment--Kaoru Tateishi read the item--contacted the surgeon and voila. Another success... Kulture korner: No shortage of plays and musicals for our citizenry to choose from these days. From local productions to Mainland imports. Next biggie--Porgy & Bess-- debuting at Blaisdell on the 21st. Tickets selling briskly... Tip: Any organization in need of someone to handle special projects--Marcie Farias is your gal. Just went into biz for herself--Blue Moon Events. Successfully did that sort of thing at The Honolulu Advertiser for years... Old style aloha shirts reportedly have sold for as much as $6,000--in Japan...

Side Glimpses

Luff notes: They met at Sea Life Park in the early 80's. Eventually, they became good friends. Then she was sent to the Philippines on a special mission. When she returned four years later, he proposed. It was a very difficult decision. She finally said yes. Last month they tied the knot in Las Vegas. Now, former nun -- Sister Charla Reeves of Kuliouou and Allan McGuire, scion of a prominent local family are Mr. & Missus. " I'm sure I'll get to heaven, now" quips McGuire... Clearing up the rumors: A recent legal notice published in the dailies noted that Haw'n Electric was suing a Michael Quiseng. Some thot it was the well known radio personality. Not so. Besides the famous Michael spells his name Qseng. No "i"...

The accolades are coming: Next for Dr. Richard Kelley--the Nat'l Multiple Sclerosis Society's highest tribute--the Hope Award (for outstanding community service). The adjectives (and dinner) flow Sept. 20--Outrigger Prince Kuhio...Didja know, dept.: Anita Mann (producer of the new Blast From the Past show at Aloha Tower Marketplace) got her big break in show biz as a dancer in Spinout (film) starring Elvis... Street seens: Lotsa red lites keeping speedsters in check along Kalanianaole Hwy... Talent, dept.: The amazing wizardry of Don Pierce (of Classic Car Rentals) who built so many of those special one-of-a-kind vehicles--some going way back to the roarin' 20's... Exciting read: John Grisham's Rainmaker... Interesting stories floating around how one former politician ended up with many acres of Haw'n Homestead land... Quotable quotes: "Forget the past. No one becomes successful in the past." (Anonymous)... Tranquil suggestion: Pack a lunch and enjoy it at the Zoo-- one of Waikiki's better bargains... Whatever happened to--Norm Compton? Was a hot after dark musical attraction in Waikiki a few years ago...Ono taste treat: Waimanalo sweet corn... Charlie Gilbert, well known for his community theater efforts here passed away in an old soldiers home, Washington, D.C. The retired Army Sgt. loved theater (Had a face like Mt. Rushmore). Stuff Happens

The book beat: Guy Kawasaki is to the computer industry what say a Mel Gibson is to films. Kawasaki is the noted author, columnist, speaker and founder of various personal computing enterprises. He played a leading role with Apple computers--as former director of software product--and recently appointed to Apple's prestigious Fellows program. Anyway--Guy's new book is--How To Drive Your Competiton Crazy. An invaluable source of irreverent and sometimes extreme stratagems in sales, marketing, production and human resources. And nobody is prouder of young Guy's success than his mom and pop--the Duke Kawasakis of Hawai... Robert Rabbett Abbett (the radio personality) devoting most of his time these days to life on the Internet. Sends out half hour Haw'n music shows weekly--listened to the world over via modem. Also reports daily on Hawaii news and sports. Entertainers-musicians who'd like to talk story with Rabbett-- and to his global audience--phone him at 263-6420. Who knows--you may reach a long long relative--in Afganistan....
