Summer Excitement
by Eric Bunyan
Summer is exciting at Waimanalo Gym and Beach Park with about 300 children ages 6 to 13 enrolled in the two Summer Fun Programs. Children have been doing crafts, earning dances and sign language songs, swimming, playing games and cleaning up our community.
Children and teens recently participated in the Hot Shot/Pepsi Basketball skills contest and sent Brandy Leaver, Chad Adviento and Joe Palenapa to the city-wide finals at Manoa Gym. A team of leaders from the two parks participated in the Mixed Volleyball championships at Kilauea Gym. Coach Marci Arroyo was pleased with her teams showing.
PAL boxers have been doing quite well recently. Coach Duke Artuyo took six boxers to Waianae on July 15 and brought back a handful of trophies. Travis and Shawn Kupaha and Jeff Cummings all came back winners.
Sign ups are now being taken for PAL flag football. Coaches are also needed. Age groups are 8 to 10 years and 11 to 13 years. Games will be played at Waimanalo District Park on Saturday mornings. The league will culminate in the second annual Lee Goeas Memorial Bowl. Interested coaches and players should contact Officer John Kaulu at Waimanalo Gym. Sign-ups will continue until mid August.
